It is May the Fourth and the world again, briefly, turns its attention towards Star Wars. We are truly in a new golden age for the saga. Each and every day, we have tons of announcements about what’s in production for both the big and small screen. We also have new comics and novels to read. Let’s us not forget the backbone to the Star Wars universe, we have new toys to hunt for. That is one thing, since 1995, with Power of the Force line, that we have not had a lack of.
Our attention today falls on Hasbro’s collector action figure line, The Black Series. Since its announcement, The Black Series has been what collectors have been wanting. The line has been beautifully cast, highly articulated, and the standard size has been 6 inches in height (not counting the likes of Yoda, R2-D2, and IG-88). With the launch of characters from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we have begun to scratch our heads on who is picking what figures receive The Black Series treatment. Hasbro, we fully know that Constable Zuvio’s appearance (excuse me, lack thereof) in The Force Awakens was not your fault, but Lando Calrissian doesn’t have a Black Series figure yet. On this day, AFJ has decided to publicly state our wish list for the next wave of Black Series figures. We have included a Con Exclusive and yet another vehicle!
The old smoothy is the obvious choice. Hasbro can’t argue that the character isn’t in the kids’ minds either because Lando has been featured in the cartoon, Star Wars Rebels. Should I bother to mention that Rebels has 3 characters in The Black Series line? The biggest issue with Lando is which one will be first. Shall it be Bespin Lando, Skiff Lando, or General Calrissian?
Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi
There have been a ton of custom-made figures of Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi. Some of the best are in Ben’s likeness that is somewhere between Sir Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor. However, with Episode IV Luke, Leia (arriving this year), and Han already with Black Series figures, you have to wonder, why not Old Ben? A great variant would even be a ghost-like version of the character from Empire and Jedi. UPDATED: Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi will become a 2016 Comic Con Exclusive!
Jabba’s court is mighty thin at the moment for that awesome Comic-Con Black Series Jabba the Hutt you picked up. Sure you have Boba Fett, Han in Carbonite, Boushh, and Bossk, but really no one else. Gamorrean Guards are also great for troop building and populating a scene.
Yes, we are still in Jabba’s place and who better than Bib Fortuna to stand next to Jabba on his royal throne. Bib is a fan favorite who has had everything from a Power of the Force figure to a Sideshow Collectible (with variant) made in his likeness. If the faceless Resistance soldiers can have a Black Series figure, Bib deserves one too.
Again, we take it back to the original trilogy and a character who was in the first wave of figures. With having Sand People make the Black Series line, you can easily build an army by supplying them with gaffi sticks and sniper rifles. However, the custom-builders out there would quickly make Sharad Hett and A'Sharad Hett.
With their quick glimpse in the Rogue One trailer, the Royal Guards will probably be in the first wave of Rogue One Black Series figures. The Emperor has a Black Series, and these guards seem like the next logical step. They would also add to the troop building line of figures that Hasbro keeps releasing. In this age, we are not happy with one Stormtrooper or one AT-AT Driver (coming soon). We want to re-create scenes and need these figures to accomplish that goal.
Alright, I can think of a few other characters over Dengar, but he represents the tipping point in creating that full line of bounty hunters from Empire. IG-88, Bossk, and Boba Fett were the first three. If Hasbro makes Dengar, then Zuckass and 4-LOM are right behind him. Maybe a little push from Simon Pegg, who played Denar in The Clone Wars (as well as Unkar Plutt in TFA), could help with this?
Jedi Master Luke Skywalker
Where is the Jedi Master Luke figure? For Yoda’s sake, we now have the movie on Blu-ray, DVD, and as a digital download. Yet as I look around, I still don’t have a LUKE FIGURE!!! He should have been in the next wave after the film was released. Does it really take that long to sculpt a figure? The custom-builders are already all over this.
Storm IV Twin-Pod Cloud Car with Pilot and Lobot
The First Order TIE Fighter is insanely awesome. The price might have been steep, but thirsty shoppers have found them for a lot less. We need another vehicle and my suggestion would be a Storm IV Twin-Pod Cloud Car with two figures! It would make a great addition to the line and one that would help booster the sales of Lando. Why not two identical pilots? Lobot is also one of the funkier characters in Star Wars. However, packaging him with the Cloud Car would give fans an additional incentive to track down this vehicle. Plus, we add to the Empire line of the series!
Comic-Con/ Star Wars Celebration Exclusive: The Rancor with Malakili
There has already been a Comic-Con/ Star Wars Celebration exclusive figure, actually twice now. Hasbro announced that the third will be a character from Rogue One, which is great, but I want them to up their game and release a Rancor, complete with his handler Malakili as a massive exclusive. This is not so grandiose when you look at the First Order TIE Fighter, nor their other Comic-Con Marvel Exclusives (Sentinel and Galactus). Just imagine a Rancor, truly larger than life to pit against your Jedi Luke Skywalker.
Hasbro, it’s May the Fourth. May the force be with you.
