Welcome to AFJ's 31 Days of Horror Figures. For the month of October, we will be spotlighting the very best of the macabre, bizarre, monstrous, and villainous action figures the industry has to offer. There will be both old and new figures here and perhaps even a significance to why we picked that figure for that day (and perhaps not). This is NOT a ranking list, just full blown horror fun for the greatest month of the year. #AFJ4LIFE
I can remember the first time I saw the action figure of Sam. It was at Toy Fair in the winter of 2008, the NECA booth. The movie was supposed to hit that Fall, but if you know anything about Trick 'R' Treat, you know the release date, the troubles with Warner Bros., and somehow Superman Returns not doing as well at the box office, changed the theatrical release to a home video release nearly a year later. Needless to say, that figure got delayed.
The comeuppance for writer/ director Michael Dougherty is that now his film, found its audience, has become a cult favorite, spawned not only Dougherty's Christmas Cult Film, Krampus, but now the original has a sequel in the works. Where is it? Well, Dougherty has been busy with a little lizard movie called Godzilla: King of the Monsters (May 2019); so his plate has been full.
Now since Trick 'R' Treat has become a cult classic, there are numerous Sam action figures and collectibles out there. I am spotlighting the one I saw so many moons ago on that tiny shelf at Toy Fair as being my favorite. Because, in all honesty, if I hadn't seen it, didn't ask what Trick 'R' Treat was, I may never have known to seek the film out. Ah, the power of an action figure and my great love of Halloween all mixed together.
