AFJ’S MAY TOP 10 HOT LIST!

By Jarrett Kruse

10. DC COMICS MULTIVERSE DAMIAN WAYNE ROBIN ($30)

I did not remember seeing this figure at the MATTEL booth a few months back at Toy Fair but it swept the Junkieverse up for a solid 24-36 hours of buying this TRU Exclusive. Although their have been many detractors to the DC MULTIVERSE line, including myself, that think $19.99 is too steep for such so-so quality in a figure compared to say HASBRO’s resilient $19.99 lines, this new Robin is not all bad. Neither hear nor there but I always find as a Bat-fanatic, we are always running low on Robin figures so I was happy to grab this. And it did not hurt to throw in a variant head for the King Shark BAF!

9. DISNEY STAR WARS ELITE SERIES HAN SOLO & LUKE SKYWALKER DIE-CAST ($55)

We knew that DISNEYSTORE.COM was going to drop their own 40th Anniversary Exclusive but rumors outside of Mos Eisley proved correct that Junkies would be getting a sweet 2-pack in diecast. However, the packaging is a little misleading in that you think you are getting a much grander set than you paid for. Still nice to have as a diehard diecast Junkie. Naturally DISNEY STORE sold out online and caused high valuation of the set as Junkies latched on to a month of May the Fourth well wishes and major cinematic historical events. Prices have come down considerably on eBay so now is a good time to grab this set without wait hint for the Mouse House to restock.

8. FUNKO POP! VINYLS GAMESTOP EXCLUSIVE SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING GITD VULTURE) ($30)

It is tough to make a monthly Top 10 Hot List without feeling the seismic effects that the Washington state based toy giant FUNKO is changing the game. POP’s are now outselling comic books; a statistic that is mind blowing to me. And, new FUNKO factions of devout POP-lovers are pardon the pun, popping up with regularity. Hey, the more mainstream accessibility for us toy collectors and I am on board. This Michael Keaton Vulture, a GAMESTOP EXCLUSIVE, has been sought after among Junkies that missed out on the pre-sale. Toomes is now going for aOund

7. NECA 7″ PREDATOR ACTION FIGURE-SERPENT HUNTER ($30)

NECA has built the foundation of who they are as a company by taking the PREDATOR franchise and turning it into gold. Most Junkies think, “if they make this figure so well, maybe I should look into their other offerings…” And like that, a NECA Junkie is born! Here we have the daunting SERPENT HUNTER PREDATOR that has increased articulation in the biceps using swivels, the elbows using double elbow joints and it even has a functioning gauntlet. Throw in the sleek new NECA packaging along with interchangeable accessories and an 8.25″ height figure feels like the right choice for $30 or under.

6. NECA ROCKY IV APOLLO CREED ($19.99)

As a die hard ROCKY fanatic, it is so great to see the figures I longed for as a child being made a reality as an adult. Sure, you get more looks from people for being an adult that collects toys but in all fairness, the toys are only just now catching up with our collective childhood dream figures. Here is the Apollo Creed from ROCKY IV that Junkies have been waiting for with Carl Weathers as the doomed heavyweight that would get killed in the ring by Ivan Drago. But before that, Apollo was one of the smoothest and coolest characters in the ROCKY-verse. I would have loved to see a post-knockout variant but that would just be gravy after 32 years of waiting. ACTION JACKSON next!

5. MATTEL DC MULTIVERSE ZOOM ($40)

I did not think that after MATTEL’s showing at Toy Fair in February, that their flailing DC MULTIVERSE line (basically a rehash of the old DC UNIVERSE line) had any life left. Leave it to a VHTF speedster to mess up your action figure timeline. ZOOM has only intermittently been available on AMAZON at retail only to be snatched up within minutes ballooning the price back up over $40. This is all happening so fast…

4. TRU EXCLUSIVE MARVEL LEGENDS SPIDER-MAN/PETER PARKER & MARY JANE 2-PACK ($60)

I know, I know, more LEGENDS. However, this TOYS R US EXCLUSIVE has some cool history. This is the first non-movie Mary Jane MARVEL LEGENDS figure. Right there is enough to pique a Junkies curiosity. Throw in that this is the first, “All New, All Different” Spidey suit from the comic books and Webheads are pouncing to get in on this two-pack stat.

3. MARVEL LEGENDS BUILD-A-FIGURE (BAF) MOVIE VULTURE WINGS ($75-$100)

Well, we definitely got something different from HASBRO this time around with the first non-figure Build-A-Figure! I know its hard to wrap your head around but I think that this was the most organic use of the SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING baddie and giving his Vulture suit real importance. Some secondary marketers are hawking just one or two pieces of the wings for a cool $35-$40. So my advice is to reserve your HOMECOMING case today, then build a set of wings, then lock up your sealed ones. So yeah, you gotta buy two cases!

2. MARVEL LEGENDS SPIDER-MAN “TECH-SUIT”/”WEB-WINGS” ($45)

The last time I have seen Junkies go this crazy for your “standard” Spider-Man figure (no bells and whistles, just Spidey in his new movie duds), was when TOY BIZ released their incredible McFarlane Spider-Man figure when MARVEL LEGENDS were just getting off the ground. Now, it looks like the Ditko/Kirby artistic influence for Spidey’s new suit in HOMECOMING is a major hit with fanboys and Junkies alike. Now if I can just locate two of these for myself…

1. MEZCO EXCLUSIVE ONE:12 COLLECTIVE PUNISHER (WHITE VARIANT) ($350)

MEZCO is having one heck of a 2017. The NYC based toy company is loving that Junkies are taking to their flagship ONE:12 COLLECTIVE action figure line. With a limited edition of just 400 made, it is tough to say whether you will even have a shot getting one on eBay for less than $400-$500. I like to think that Frank Castle would appreciate that his bounty is just going to keep going up as ONE:12’s continue to hold their value and be stunning display pieces. To the lucky few that have found this piece, it is definitely a no-brainer to hold onto it unless you have some immediate fiduciary expenditure to attend to of course…like buying the rest of the ONE:12’s you missed!

****AFJ’S TOP 10 MAY HOT LIST: HONORABLE MENTION!****

STORM COLLECTIBLES STREET FIGHTER RYU ($54.99)

An absolute steal for the quality of action figure that you are getting. Superior sculpting, paint apps & over 30 points of articulation. Ryu also stands larger than 7-inches and comes with the ability to do some serious STREET FIGHTER original moves on your display shelf. Definitely one to pick up!
