AFJ’S TOP 10 ADAM WEST BATMAN FIGURES (W/ BONUS PICKS)
By Jarrett Kruse
After a few days of processing the grief that the first hero in my life has passed on to fight greater adventures, I tried to focus on the AFJ aspect of Adam West’s legacy. Nowadays when anew comic book, movie or TV character is a hit, we have come to expect as collectors, that we will get a solid figure from the property with accurate likenesses (if applicable), great articulation, fantastic paint apps & awesome poseability. However with the 1966 BATMAN TV show, it took a good long while, decades actually, before Junkies could really feel like they had legit figures from the campy classic that has paved the way for a costume filled 21st century. So I scoured my personal collection and the web in general to come up with not only my Top 10 Adam West Bat-figures, but also the little extra non-figure pieces from the iconic show that will be the perfect additions to your ’66 themed Batcave to honor the man that mastered the Batusi. (*BTW I had to add an extra one so it is really the TOP 11 plus bonus picks, not just 10.)
11. FUNKO VINYL IDOLZ BATMAN ($19.99)
While the VINYL IDOLZ line from FUNKO has not vaulted into the stratosphere like their big brother POP! VINYLS, I absolutely love this line. The animation style is very indicative of a hybrid of 60’s pop art mixed in with Seth McFarlane’s animated universe with whom West was a big part. Again, sold out right now but an awesome get for your office desk.
10. FIGURES TOY CO. BRUCE WAYNE 8-INCH ($25.99)
FIGURES TOY CO. is a small but distinguished outfit out of Florida that produces fantastic figures. These are the high end MEGO-style figures you had as a kid with added 21st century technology. The packaging is dynamite and sturdy and if you are going for the retro BATMAN ’66 figures, their is no better choice. In fact, I have an entire shelf devoted to their BATMAN ’66 figures and they are brilliant. Naturally, this piece is out of stock right now on EE but here is the link just in case. 9. DC COMICS MULTIVERSE BATMAN ’66 4″ ACTION FIGURE ($11.99)
These 4-inch DC MULTIVERSE figures with 14 points of articulation are some of my favorites. I loved the updated look of the ’66 Bat-suit and the mixture of old school and new. I really hope that MATTEL resurrects this line as I would love it if they did the rest of the ’66 cast. A steal for just $11.99 on AMAZON.
8. FUNKO ’66 POP! VINYLS BATMAN & POP! RIDES BATMOBILE
FUNKO is set on toy world domination led by their flagship POP! VINYLS line. Both the POP RIDES and regular POP have seen a sharp spike since the loss of Adam West last week. I actually think that these retro POP pieces are perfect companions to the 1966 TV series. LINK: http://bit.ly/2sb1Lja
7. FUNKO BATMOBILE WITH BATMAN & ROBIN ($49.99)
I was so fired up at Toy Fair that FUNKO is determined to bring back 3.75″ figures with a solid 9 points of articulation. Also, the only way to get the Robin figure is if you purchase this Batmobile set so the completist in me says I must have this. I am psyched to see what properties get the 3.75″ treatment next. To get the Batmobile set with the two figures, click here: http://bit.ly/2txyf53. If you need just a single Batman, you can get that too for $10.99 here: http://bit.ly/2s1Q6mF
If you are looking to impress your houseguest, then DIAMOND SELECT’s Premier Collection Statue is a must have for the dedicated Gothamite. The 12-inch scale resin statue of Adam West as Batman is brilliantly sculpted by Clayburn Moore. This piece is a LIMITED EDITION of just 1966 pieces (get it?) which means that it is going through the roof in price because of Mr. West’s passing. Still, this is really a beautiful high end piece for ’66 Bat-Junkies. I really love the “POW!: base too, very clever. LINK: http://bit.ly/2rpsgOX
Batman’s legendary surfing reputation culminated in the Caped Crusader wearing his yellow shorts. And don’t forget the Bat-Surfboard that comes with the figure. I was bummed that MATTEL did not continue making the rest of the TV characters in 6-inch form but maybe one day. This figure is a steal on eBay for as little as $10.
Any fan of the ’66 BATMAN show remembers the running gag of Bats & Robin climbing up the sides of buildings using their Batarang’s. Usually a celebrity of the period would make an appearance in one of the windows as the ascended to the top of the building. So when MATTEL released this awesome two-pack, I was all over it. You can even mount the building pieces and make your own makeshift scene from the TV show. Also, this is the only chance to get Robin in 6-inch form. A fantastic set and a great conversation starter.
3. NECA 1/4 SCALE ADAM WEST BATMAN ACTION FIGURE ($100-$150)
This amazing piece was one of my first 1/4 scale figures and it is still one of my favorites. The figure stands at a towering 18-inches and is fully poseable with the late Adam West’s likeness. The piece comes in a beautiful window box case and has a slew of extras including a functional utility belt and interchangeable hands just to name a few. A really amazing figure all the way around.
2. NECA TOYS R US EXCLUSIVE 7-INCH ACTION FIGURE ($50)
This TRU Exclusive from 2015 is one of the best and easily beats similar figures in the same size range. It is basically a miniature version of the 1/4 scale figure above but smaller and at a price point that is hard to pass up. Naturally prices have soared in the last week on the secondary market but I hear that some TRU’s still have it on the pegs. A must have for this awesome figure which at retail is just $19.99 if you get lucky.
1. HOT TOYS BATMAN 1966 1/6 SCALE COLLECTIBLE FIGURE ($199.99)
Their is no doubting that HOT TOYS are the Cadillac’s of action figures. While the price-point is high, you will definitely know where that extra cash is going. The figure has 30 points of articulation as well as interchangeable faces to match Adam West’s campy expressions. An absolutely epic figure that is the best of the best. Below are the full details of what comes in the box.

BARBIE COLLECTOR PINK LABEL CLASSIC BATMAN KEN DOLL ($50)
Who cares if it is technically a Barbie doll? This Batman figure is a really sweet work of art with amazing detail and an outstanding cloth costume. Great as a starter figure for the young new Bat-fans as well.
MATTEL BATMAN & ROBIN FIGURE AND BATMOBILE GIFT SET ($75)
Here is another set that is highly coveted because like the set above, this is the only way you can secure a Robin figure from this line. Both the Boy Wonder and the Caped Crusader stand at 6-inches tall and fit snugly into the cockpit of the Batmobile for maximum playability.
How can you leave out LEGO in the Adam West Bat-canon? The toy giant managed to capture Adam West’s suit perfectly and this tiny figure makes for an awesome addition to your Bat-collection. Just don’t leave it on the floor and forget about it when you get up in the middle of the night and step on it.
BIF BANG POW! BATMAN CLASSIC TV SERIES BRUCE WAYNE & DICK GRAYSON PIN MATE WOODEN FIGURE ($4.99 EACH)
I was skeptical last year when the in house brand of ENTERTAINMENT EARTH debuted these small wooden figures. I totally misjudged the market for these as they went on to sell very well for the online retail giant. Now, EE is going to be launching a slew of new characters from well known properties in the PIN MATE vein. These are wonderful gifts for kids as well as stocking stuffers during the holidays. Pick some up here: http://bit.ly/2skTWpF
BATMAN 1966 TV SERIES BATMAN ADAM WEST MINI-BUST ($49.99)
Sculptor Jean St. Jean is at the top of his game with this gorgeous looking mini-bust. At 6-inches tall, this piece is fantastic to display in your own Batcave. The detail of the resin bust is dynamite and eerily accurate to Adam West’s famous mug. You can get yours here: http://bit.ly/2sA2I59
The MEGO-style figures from FIGURES TOY CO. will truly take you back to a simpler time of figures. The retro look of FTC’s figures make the entire line of BATMAN ’66 figures come alive with their psychedelic appearance and colorful costumes. Plus a removable cowl is pretty awesome and like having two figures in one.
MATTEL ADAM WEST BATMAN 1966 TV SHOW UTILITY BELT & BATARANG PROP REPLICA SET ($80)
I had been waiting on this set since the first time I watched a BATMAN rerun in the early 80’s. While it is not as sturdy as I would like, it is the best set that you will find for the price. Just that this exists shows that manufacturers know the adult collector has some serious coinage to spend and gives them reason to make more cool prop replicas in the future.
MATTEL ADAM WEST BATMAN “THE COWL” ($100)
MATTY COLLECTOR produced “The Cowl” a few years back and Bat-fans went totally bonkers. Now Junkies can buy and wear a replica of Adam West’s Bat-cowl to Cons, the comic shop or even the supermarket. I actually am having a window box made for this piece so that I can have it on display.
DIAMOND SELECT BATMAN CLASSIC 1966 TV SERIES BATPHONE VINYL BANK ($27.99)
This new item just recently arrived at AFJ Headquarters and it is a pretty cool piece to have in your personal Batcave. The classic red phone from the TV show is finally here in vinyl bank form but I actually am just going to use mine for display. Easily one of my favorite pieces of ’66 BATMAN nostalgia. LINK: http://bit.ly/2txCP3j
DIAMOND SELECT BATMAN CLASSIC 1966 TV SERIES SHAKESPEARE HEAD BUST BANK ($69.99)
I saved my favorite for last. Yes, it is the ominous Shakespeare bust from Wayne Manor that gave the Dynamic Duo access to the Batpoles to get to the Batcave. Perfectly realized by DST, this is no ordinary looking bank as it is an amazing piece to put on display and pretend that it is more than vinyl bank. Yes, the neck goes back to reveal a dial and button for extra authenticity. Just don’t expect any secret bookcases to magically open once you move the functioning neck hinge back!
