AFJ’S TOP 25 SEPTEMBER PRE-ORDERS W/ BONUS PICKS!

By Jarrett Kruse

It is a weird feeling being an East Coast native and normally loving this time of year and Autumn in general. Sadly, the palm trees are yet to start turning the magical colors that I am so used to you from years in Jersey and even more so in my years in Madison, WI where I plan on retiring once AFJ’s IPO goes through. That being said, there is so much awesome stuff coming to the Junkieverse in the coming months that a tear actually came out of my wallet. Remember, whoever dies with the most toys wins!

25. DIAMOND SELECT VINIMATES BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II MARTY & DOC ($9.99 EACH)

Great Scott indeed! I love DIAMOND SELECT and their plethora of wide and varied licenses. While DST BACK TO THE FUTURE action figures in the vein of MARVEL SELECT style is my dream, I will totally settle for these new Marty McFly & Doc Brown VINIMATES to hold me over for the time being. The 4-inch vinyl figures are from the first sequel to the seminal time-travel franchise when Marty & Doc are in Hill Valley, CA in the year 2015 (2 years ago in real life for those feeling old). VINIMATES are fantastic to pose because they actually have articulated necks for further customization. Each VINIMATE comes packaged in a full-color window box and they sell for a very manageable $9.99 each.

24. BANDAI PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING TITAN REDEEMER ($29.99)

One thing that I have learned over the years as a Junkie is that even if they do not specifically collect them, everybody loves a giant robot or monster. Now, with PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING hitting theaters next March, Junkies are prepping to start picking up all of the new Kaiju’s & Jaeger’s from the sequel starring John Boyega (aka FN-2187) & Scott Eastwood (son of Clint). This time around, BANDAI has picked up the license and have lots of new robots & monsters ready for us to purchase soon. The Titan Redeemer jumped out at me as my favorite from the first wave of what they are calling the “Robot Spirits” line. BANDAI is pretty serious when it comes to the materials they use in their products and the Titan Redeemer is made of ABS (a hard type of plastic) & PVC standing over 6-inches tall. Lots of articulation for posing and even comes with a “Scrapper” robot figure!

23. FACTORY ENTERTAINMENT IT PENNYWISE PREMIUM MOTION STATUE ($124.99)

Stephen King’s IT is now a box office smash with a sequel already slated for 2019 and it is all thanks to one very scary clown that Tim Curry originally embodied in the 1990 TV mini-series. This brilliant Premium Motion Statue from FACTORY ENTERTAINMENT has Curry’s likeness as Pennywise standing at 15″ tall from the super spooky scene where he waves to some of the original Derry, ME kids as they arrive back in to the cursed town 27 years later. Made of high quality resin, the piece even features audio of some of Pennywise’s best lines from the film.

22. SIDESHOW COLLECTIBLES STAR WARS 1/6 HAN SOLO IN CARBONITE 1/6 ($249.99)

I have been obsessed with Han Solo in Carbonite since seeing EMPIRE STRIKES BACK in 1980 as a precocious 3 year old. The first thing I put in my apartment when moving to LA was a life-size cardboard stand-up of Jabba the Hutt’s favorite showpiece. The 1/6 scale figures from SIDESHOW COLLECTIBLES continue to curry favor among Junkies with their incredible attention to detail and incredibly lifelike sculpts. Frozen Han can be positioned both vertically & horizontally if you feel like recreating the Bespin hallway scene or putting him upright like in Jabba’s palace on Tattooine. The base has swappable floor options to enhance the play experience by letting Junkies decide how to display this old pirate. As if that was not enough, SIDESHOW gives us a base that illuminates along the carbon slab control panel. Junkies love Han Solo in Carbonite; he knows.

21. MAFEX BATMAN BEGINS SCARECROW ($84.99)

MEDICOM’s MAFEX line is on a major hot streak right now. I get that $85 might sound high for a 6.3″ figure but you will know where that extra money goes when you open the box. Actor Cillian Murphy was perfect as Scarecrow in BATMAN BEGINS and this is definitely the figure I have been waiting a dozen years on as I thought his interpretation of Dr. Jonathan Crane was brilliant.

The highly articulated and fully posable figure comes with extra interchangeable hands, a masked and unmasked head, a removed cowl that he can hold, a lighter and the real coups is a Demon Batman head, hands & chest part. And look at that likeness of Murphy–very impressive. (*BATMAN BEGINS Batman figure not included)

20. GENTLE GIANT STAR WARS EARLY BIRD 4-PACK JUMBO SET ($250.99)

Okay so forty years ago, a small Sci-Fi film called STAR WARS hit theaters and became a worldwide phenomenon. The backstory about the action figures is one of my all-time favorite real life toy story’s. When STAR WARS was released in May of 1977, fans rushed to stores to pick up toys from the film only to find that there were none. At the time, MEGO Corporation was the big dog in the toy world but they turned down the opportunity to pick up the STAR WARS license. Enter KENNER out of Cincinnati, Ohio, a smaller company that was woefully unprepared for fan demand for STAR WARS figures.

The holidays were rapidly approaching and KENNER was in a jam to get toys on the shelves but no one could have prepared for the voracious appetites of Junkies to buy every STAR WARS figure they could find. Back in those days, movies could stay in theaters up to a year. Since Christmas was going to be a bust, KENNER made a clever move offering customers an “Early Bird Certificate Package” that included a mail-away certificate redeemable for the first four STAR WARS figures that came with a diorama display stand, a few stickers & a STAR WARS fan club membership card. So parents were in a frenzy to pick up the “STAR WARS EARLY BIRD KIT” for the Christmas season that was really just a cardboard envelope assuring that when the figures were made, they would be the first little buggers to get them. It was a monster success and revolutionized the action figure world with KENNER selling over 300 million STAR WARS figures between 1978 & 1985 and the EARLY BIRD KIT became the Holy Grail of STAR WARS figures.

Now, four decades later, the brilliant artisans over at GENTLE GIANT are bringing the kit back–JUMBO style! The set comes with Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbacca & R2-D2 and even includes a large foldout replica display stand to hold the “Original 12.” Very excited to get my mitts on this set as GENTLE GIANT continues to prove why they are one of the most sought after high end toy companies.

19. DC COLLECTIBLES DC ICONS DEATH OF SUPERMAN 6″ DOOMSDAY & SUPERMAN TWO-PACK DELUXE ($64.99)

DC COLLECTIBLES had an impressive showing at Toy Fair 2017 and this set was one of my favorites of the lot. I remember picking up DC COMICS “The Death of Superman” as a kid and it was a huge deal back then. Now, DCC recounts the tale of the Man of Steel’s demise at the hands of Doomsday in a new Deluxe Two-Pack. Besides Superman (6″) & Doomsday (7.1″), the set was designed by Ivan Reis, sculpted by Dave Cortes and comes with a slew of extras including 2 pairs of hands, a closed eyes head, a yelling head, 2 effect parts, torn cape fragment & the iconic flag cape with a rock base. This is a seriously impressive set gang.

18. MAFEX JUSTICE LEAGUE THE FLASH ($94.99)

I admit that I have not been a huge fan of any of the DC FILMS that have been released in the post-Nolan age. The dark, morose tones of the films have struck me as a universe where the sun never shines. However, I am genuinely excited to see JUSTICE LEAGUE in November to see if it can all come together under the combined guidance of Snyder & Whedon. Now, the second issue for me is that The CW’s THE FLASH is far and away my favorite network TV show and I think that Grant Gustin is very much the right actor for the gig. So when Ezra Miller was cast in the feature film, I was very “eh” about the whole thing because of my loyalty to The CW show and Gustin’s performance as Barry Allen. To be honest, I have not loved the footage I have seen of The Flash in action for the new film in the trailers BUT I actually love how the Scarlet Speedster’s suit translates so well in action figure form. MAFEX is high quality and the fully articulated figure includes both a masked & unmasked head with Miller’s likeness. Throw in a set of interchangeable hands and a display stand and I would gladly jump into the Speed Force to snag one of these.

18. NECA 1/4 SCALE CIVIL WAR CAPTAIN AMERICA ($99.99)

I seriously cannot wait for this CIVIL WAR CAPTAIN AMERICA figure from our Jersey brethren at NECA. I am in love with their 1/4 scale figures and in my opinion, are the best overall value a Junkie can get for the price. The dynamically sculpted figure boasts over 30 points of articulation and stands at 18″ tall with the likeness of Chris Evans. The figure also comes with Cap’s Wakandan-Vibranium made shield as well as a pair of interchangeable hands and heads.

17. MEZCO ONE:12 COLLECTIVE SPIDER-MAN (BLACK SUIT) PX PREVIEWS EXCLUSIVE ($80)

MEZCO ONE:12 COLLECTIVE? Kind of a big deal in the Junkieverse this year. Now, we are getting treated to not one but THREE PX PREVIEWS EXCLUSIVES (see the other two below). The SECRET WARS alien symbiote suit that Peter Parker takes back to NYC makes its debut as a ONE:12 figure later this year and I could not be happier. The combination of old school MEGO-style features combined with 21st century digital technology has allowed the ONE:12 figures to become the hottest and most consistently well made lines of the last 5 years in the under $100 market. Spidey stands at 7″ (1/12 scale) and includes 6 interchangeable hands, several web-streams and of course MEZCO’s signature base for dynamic posing & display.

16. NECA ROBOCOP VS THE TERMINATOR ENDOCOP & TERMINATOR DOG TWO-PACK ($29.99)

Another NECA entry makes the AFJ TOP 25 this month with the debut of the new ROBOCOP VS THE TERMINATOR ENDOCOP & TERMINATOR DOG 2-Pack! Die-hards will remember the 25 year old (gulp) DARK HORSE comic book mini-series written by the legendary Frank Miller with pencils by Walt Simonson. Now, Junkies can relive the classic time travel tale mashup of two of the most popular characters in the entire Sci-Fi canon. The two-pack includes the EndoCop (7″) and Terminator Dog with both pieces sporting between 20 & 25 points of articulation and of course the awesome Auto 9 pistol.

15. MEZCO ONE:12 COLLECTIVE WOLVERINE (X-FORCE) PX PREVIEWS EXCLUSIVE ($80)

Yes, it is another entry from the ONE:12 COLLECTIVE from MEZCO and its a doozy. Alternate costumes are always a hot item because it is a departure from the norm but add in that it is Wolverine and you have a figure that everyone is going to be after. Mez and company captured the compact comic book build of Logan beautifully. The 6-inch figure has the usual 30 points of articulation and the ONE:12’s signature detailed cloth costume buffed to a high shine. The accessories for the cranky Canadian include an alternate facial expression, a whopping 8 interchangeable hands, the Muramasa Blade & sheath all to be posed in Berserker mode with the collectibe base.

14. NECA MARVEL DAREDEVIL (CLASSIC) 1/4 SCALE FIGURE ($99.99)

Fans of the hero from Hell’s Kitchen have had an excellent last few years with the hit NETFLIX show and THE DEFENDERS spinoff. Daredevil has always been one of my favorite NYC-based characters and I always had admiration for Matt Murdock’s commitment to his neighborhood aka “The Kitchen.” Now, we are getting an epic 1/4 scale figure of The Man without Fear in a gritty, classic MARVEL look that I absolutely love from NECA. At 18 inches, Daredevil has more than 30 points of articulation for the ultimate experience in 1/4 scale posing. Besides the Daredevil head, you get a dope looking Matt Murdock with that cool looking white eye blind effect. There is also a removed cowl, a few batons, interchangeable hands and more. An easy must have on my checklist.

13. NECA BATMAN VS. ALIENS TWO-PACK ($44.99)

More NECA Junkies! Man, did I love this at Toy Fair back in February in person. NECA puts together these brilliant looking background dioramas for most of their big show offerings and for this set, I must have taken 100 pics from every angle. This is the first twp-pack set from NECA’s “Versus” line that features classic comic book mashups. This is seriously an amazing two-pack based on the 20 year old BATMAN/ALIENS comic book mini-series from DC & DARK HORSE. Trust me, it is worth a read! I mean a Joker Alien with a bendable tail? Sign me up for two sets.

12. KING ARTS 1/9 SCALE DIECAST ANT-MAN FIGURE ($144.99)

I think that MARVEL’s ANT-MAN film is easily the most underrated one in the MCU. Although we did receive an excellent ANT-MAN movie figure from MARVEL LEGENDS and an awesome BAF when Scott lives large in the epic airport battle from CIVIL WAR, but that was really it. Enter up and coming toy company KING ARTS from overseas with a new line of 1/9 scale (8.5″) die-cast action figures. I love diecast, always have since I was a kid. There is just something about the weight of a die-cast figure in your hand that makes it seem like whatever you paid was worth it. I love that KING ARTS is combining die-cast with a highly articulated figure and I am excited to get my hands on this. Seven interchangeable hands and an ANT-MAN themed base together with a flexible figure stand.

11. HOT TOYS STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI MMS428 EXECUTIONER TROOPER 1/6 SCALE COLLECTIBLE FIGURE ($203.99)

HOT TOYS is the Don Corleone of high end action figures. The big cheese, the big Macher, the man. More and more, I see Junkies throwing in the towel on their collections in favor of purchasing one HOT TOYS a month instead of 20 modestly priced pieces. It is a growing trend I have noticed with collectors because the quality is of HOT TOYS products are so off the charts. I am loving this new EXECUTIONER TROOPER from the upcoming episode in the STAR WARS saga due out on December 15th. The extras and details would take up a whole page here and at “just” $203.99, this is actually a deal and a half.

10. BLITZWAY GHOSTBUSTERS PETER VENKMAN 1/6 SCALE FIGURE ($219.99)

BLITZWAY had some serious product to show off at SDCC this year and I spent a solid 90 minutes at their booth taking it all in. Its not every day that you see an ECTO-1 that is bigger than an 7 year old child. Near the vehicle was the most epic Peter Venkman that I have ever seen. Bill Murray’s game show host style scientist fighting the paranormal has never looked so amazing in the iconic Ghosbusters jumpsuit. At a foot tall, Venkman has one of the most highly detailed and accurate facial likenesses I have ever seen. And the extras? There are more than all the radioactive marshmallow in Manhattan. They even included two lit cigarettes, epic!

9. DC COLLECTIBLES BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES JOKERMOBILE ($84.99)

BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES has aged like a fine wine over the past quarter century ushering in a slew of new fans via streaming devices. As it turns out, the Clown Prince of Crime found out where Batman got all those wonderful toys as DC COLLECTIBLES is set to release a new BTAS Jokermobile. This dope ride will fit your 6″ figures from previous waves from BTAS and it even lights up. Need!!

8. NECA MARVEL CLASSICS DEADPOOL (X-FORCE) 1/4 SCALE FIGURE ($99.99)

Yes, it is another 1/4 scale figure from NECA and its X-FORCE DEADPOOL which means that Wade Wilson-ites will be mopping this figure up everywhere it is available. The 18-inch figure has all new deco based on DP’s alternate X-FORCE black & grey costume and it is glorious to see in person. DEADPOOL has reached cult status on so many levels among collectors and after the boffo box office the solo film did in 2016, Junkies are chomping at the bit to see Wade back in action next year alongside Josh Brolin’s Cable. The figure comes with over 30 points of articulation and includes katanas, sai, machine guns, pistol & knife accessories with working holsters and sheaths. Taco time Junkies.

7. KING ARTS IRON MAN 3 1/9 SCALE DIECAST IRON MAN MARK XXXIII SILVER CENTURION ARMOR ($189.99)

My favorite armor of Tony Stark’s as a kid was the Silver Centurion Armor. I remember being at sleepaway camp and Mama & Papa Junkie would send me the latest issues from the spinner racks from when they debuted the armor and I flipped out with excitement in my camp bunk. At the time, the whole “Mark (fill in the blank)” was not really addressed much in the books. Despite having several figures of the Silver Centurion Armor in my collection, none are die-cast metal and that is why this landed a cushy spot on my list. This is another KING ARTS creation (one more below too) and it stands a solid 9.5″ with some really interesting extras including light-up effects in the eyes, chest & palms. Oh, and the figure is not only articulated, it is made with real metal alloy joints.

6. HASBRO STAR WARS BLACK SERIES (EXTENDED UNIVERSE) JAINA SOLO ($21.99)

STAR WARS BLACK SERIES continues to be an AFJ favorite and now the shift into the Extended Universe kicks into high gear with the release of the spawn of Leia & Han, JAINA SOLO! This is going to be the DARTH REVAN of this Christmas holiday season if you are able to find it at retail. It looked epic at HASBRO’s booth in San Diego and who doesn’t love one part Skywalker, one part Solo that comes with a blaster, a removable helmet, a flight suit AND a lightsaber. Parenting done right!

PRE-ORDER LINK: http://bit.ly/2xkwFZW

5. KING ARTS ANT-MAN 1/9 SCALE DIECAST YELLOW JACKET FIGURE ($144.99)

As mentioned earlier, I am a huge ANT-MAN movie fan so I was totally bummed when we did not get a MARVEL LEGENDS YELLOW JACKET. I thought that Corey Stoll (MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, HOUSE OF CARDS) killed it as Darren Cross and the suit he made at Pym Tech was begging to be made into an action figure. Thankfully, KING ARTS makes the list again with a piece I am just itching to get my hands on. Like the previous KING ARTS entries, the highly articulated figure is die-cast metal standing 8.5″ with half a dozen interchangeable hands and the flexible figure stand. Very cool indeed.

4. SQUARE ENIX MARVEL UNIVERSE VARIANT PLAY ARTS KAI WAR MACHINE ($149.99)

Don Cheadle’s WAR MACHINE may be in bad shape in the MCU but Lieutenant James “Rhodey” Rhodes of the USMC has never looked better in this new entry from SQUARE-ENIX’s PLAY ARTS KAI line. This Variant figure comes with more extras than a fully loaded Range Rover. Besides the battle-damaged distressed look of the figure, it stands at close to 11″ tall and comes with 2 shoulder mounting machine guns, 2 shoulder missile pods, a pair of alternate hands & 4 wrist mounted lasers. Go get ’em Rhodey.

3. MEZCO ONE:12 COLLECTIVE DEADPOOL (X-FORCE) PX PREVIEWS EXCLUSIVE ($80)

Hey what do you know, its another MEZCO ONE:12 COLLECTIVE PX PREVIEWS EXCLUSIVE nearing the top of the charts. This time it is again, the X-FORCE DEADPOOL in his grey & black duds that MEZCO describes as a, “comprehensively detailed outfit and portrait sculpture.” The 1/12 scale figure comes with more extras than than my current health plan proving that when it comes to the ONE:12 COLLECTIVE, there is no skimping on the details while keeping their prices at a stable $80. Beware, this will sell out!

2. BANDAI JAPAN STAR WARS MEISHO MOVIE REALIZATION SOHEI DARTH MAUL ($89.99)

I am obsessed with BANDAI’s MEISHO MOVIE REALIZATION series. Mashing up hot properties like MARVEL & STAR WARS with feudal Japanese warriors makes for one of my favorite hybrid figures of the year. I just received the YUMI ASHIGARU STORMTROOPER for my birthday and it has vaulted into my Top 10 of 2017 thus far. Envisioned by sculptor Takayuki Takeya, “Sohei” means warrior monk in Japanese; naturally a good choice for a Sith badass like DARTH MAUL.

I love what they did with Maul’s famous signature dual-lightsaber by making it into a halberd (a combined spear and battle-ax) along with a mean looking Japanese mask. Standing at 6.7″ with lots of accessories, Darth Maul has never looked so formidable.

PRE-ORDER LINK: http://bit.ly/2xi1tbo

1. NECA TMNT RAPHAEL (IN DISGUISE) 1/4 SCALE FIGURE (1990 MOVIE) ($99.99)

90’s nostalgia continues with the more popular than ever TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES from Eastman & Laird. The property has turned into a cash cow for two guys that created the TMNT originally as a goof before self-publishing a 40-page comic when they pooled their tax refunds. Over 30 years later, TMNT continues to thrive as a worldwide sensation that has no problems  finding new audiences with each new generation. NECA continues their 1/4 scale line from the original film franchise but this time, it is a variant of sorts with Raphael in disguise as seen in the film. Junkies have been buzzing about this figure for months as I cannot reiterate the value the collector is getting from NECA’s 1/4 scale figures. Raph stands 16.5″ tall featuring 30 points of articulation with double elbow joints, a real fabric trench coat with a removable sculpted hat and backpack. Oh and pizza, you get a slice of pizza accessory. God I miss east coast food.

Now, the hottest babe this side of Krypton will be available for Junkies based on an illustration by Shunya Yamashita. High end and great for a Junkies display case.
