AFJ TOP 10 HOT LIST FEBRUARY 2017!
By Jarrett Kruse
Can you Junkies believe that it is March already? 2017 is just cruising along with Toy Fair come and gone and AFJ moving swiftly into the coveted summer & holiday movie seasons where most of our Junkie dollars go towards. February saw lots of new movers and shakers and one thing is for sure, Junkies love Groot, no matter his size. We also continue our obsession with FUNKO's POP! Vinyls and HASBRO's mainstay MARVEL LEGENDS reserving a spot or two or three on the AFJ TOP 10 HOT LIST every month with regularity. So lets dive right in and see what climbed the charts in February to make the TOP 10 HOT LIST!
***PRICES NEXT TO THE TOP 10 HOT LIST ARE CUMULATIVE AVERAGES DETERMINED BY DEMAND AND SOLD LISTINGS ON THE SECONDARY MARKET VIA FIGURESPEC.COM. THEY ARE NOT ACTUAL RETAIL COST!***
10. WALMART EXCLUSIVE KONG: SKULL ISLAND 18-INCH POSEABLE KONG MEGA-FIGURE ($60)
I am not usually a giant monster movie kinda Junkie but I am really looking forward to seeing KONG: SKULL ISLAND next week. The CGI looks pretty amazing in the film with an A-list cast to boot and who doesn't love a giant gorilla running rampant on a prehistoric island? This oversized KONG, a WalMart Exclusive has been being snatched up by Junkies across the country and flipped for a tidy profit. Its the nature of the beast I guess; or in this case, the KONG!
9. MARVEL LEGENDS OLD MAN LOGAN ($32)
Timing it in perfectly with Friday's release of LOGAN, Hugh Jackman's supposed last time as every Junkies favorite angry Canadian; Old Man Logan finally makes his MARVEL LEGENDS debut. While we got him a few years back when the MARVEL UNIVERSE 3.75" figures were all the rage. Heck, it even came with a baby Hulk. However, finally getting an OLD MAN LOGAN in time for what is poised to be his biggest movie yet seems an apt way to end Jackman's run as The Wolverine...even if its not in his likeness.
8. MEZCO ONE:12 COLLECTIVE THE PUNISHER ($95)
The ONE:12 COLLECTIVE line from MEZCO is white hot right now on the heels of another successful showing at Toy Fair. After Frank Castle's successful reintroduction to the MARVEL TV Universe last year, Junkies have been waiting on this more classic and non-NETFLIX version of The Punisher. The NYC based MEZCO TOYZ Pre-Sold Out of this new figure and it has seen steady resell action on the secondary market.
7. DC COLLECTIBLES DCTV ZOOM ($35)
I watch THE FLASH on THE CW like my life depends on it every Tuesday night. I am so invested in these characters after less than three seasons on the air and to be honest, I was never a huge Flash reader in my comic book reading days. However, now I have gone back to read some core trades of the character to learn more about his varied origins and underrated Rogues Gallery. Speaking of which, here is the ZOOM figure from DC COLLECTIBLES that I have been waiting on for months. Beautifully stylistic with a wonderful match of the onscreen villain, I can't wait to pick this one up.
6. REVOLTECH AMAZING YAMAGUCHI SPIDER-MAN ($85)
Have you seen these awesome Yamaguchi figures from REVOLTECH? I started with DEADPOOL and now have SPIDER-MAN and these figures are just a blast to play with and photograph. The amount of extras that you get for the cost are truly insane and these are the first figures that I have seen that can actually match a characters comic book expressions. And the articulation is totally off the charts. A must have piece that should see a resurgence in price if SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING is a hit in July.
GROOT strikes again on the AFJ Top 10 HOT LIST! This iteration is from the coveted MARVEL LEGENDS line and the current TRU Exclusive figure. In fact, this piece just went up on TRU's website just the other night after topping out at $40+ when it first surfaced before Toy Fair. Now with just two months until the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY sequel drops, fans of GROOT, BABY GROOT, POTTED GROOT, whatever, are going to come out of the woodwork so pick this up if you find it on the pegs.
4. FUNKO POP! VINYLS STRANGER THINGS DEMOGORGON (CHASE) ($50)
If Toy Fair '17 showed me anything, its that FUNKO is not going anywhere and the POP! Vinyls-nation is now outselling comic books. The little POP's that could continue to chug along with the release of the wildly popular NETFLIX series STRANGER THINGS versions of the compact vinyl figures. Naturally the two CHASE pieces shot to the top of our charts as
3. NECA TOYS SUPERMAN VS. MUHAMMAD ALI 2-PACK ($45)
The classic 1978 comic book is brought to life from NECA in a fantastic 2-pack that mashes up the Man of Steel with The Greatest. I love how perfectly these figures capture Neal Adams' original pencils from the epic DC comic book. The packaging really captures the feel of the almost 40-year old comic book with an almost battle-damaged appearing box. Together, Big Blue meeting the man that floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee is a match that has always needed to be visited in action figure form.
2. STAR WARS 6-INCH BLACK SERIES 40TH ANNVERSARY ($200)
During the HASBRO Event at Toy Fair '17, the STAR WARS guys from the Rhode Island toy giant announced that we could order these new 40th Anniversary BLACK SERIES figures right then and there. You never saw so many folks trying to multitask covering the event and trying to reload the HASBRO TOY SHOP page at the same time. Prices immediately soared on eBay after selling out on HTS showing that the 40th Anniversary of the original STAR WARS on top of EPISODE 8 is going to mean major bucks for HASBRO. The Vintage cardbacks are a nice homage to the original toys that KENNER made back when the demand outweighed what the Cincinnati based toy company could handle. By the way, it seems that the Han Solo & R2D2 figures are both one per case causing a spike on the secondary market once word was out.
1. FUNKO POP! VINYLS STRANGER THINGS ELEVEN (CHASE) ($70)
STRANGER THINGS is the best thing to happen to EGGO waffles since E.T. discovered REESES PIECES. Eleven is now forever tied to America's number one toaster oven breakfast staple. This rare CHASE POP! has only been gaining traction as the Season 2 trailer for STRANGER THINGS premiered at the beginning of the month in a coveted Super Bowl commercial spot. Their is just no telling how strong the power of POP continues to be in the Junkieverse!
MARVEL LEGENDS MARVEL'S ANGELA ($30)
Rights battles seem to be a very big thing in the toy industry and none was more legendary than Todd McFarlane & Neil Gaiman sparring over the license to Angela. While she made her first appearance in the early days of the SPAWN comic book series, Gaiman & McFarlane fought over the rights to the character to which the former won and then sold her namesake to the House of Ideas (aka MARVEL). So its no surprise that the MARVEL iteration of Angela has taken a lot of Junkies by surprise as a must-have figure of the first quarter of 2017.
