AFJ TOP 10 HOTLIST JUNE 2016!
By Jarrett Kruse
We are officially half way done with 2016 and it is time to wrap up as we ease into July. It seems that HASBRO is killing it with their MARVEL LEGENDS line, barely giving our wallets a chance to breathe. However, it is much better than Junkies not being able to locate their prey. By the time we are finished with one wave, there is a new one dropping! Basically it is an orgiastic feast for Junkies with HASBRO planting their flag. But, there were a bunch of non-MARVEL figures that made June's hotlist and next month, the list is sure to have some SDCC Exclusives rise to the occasion. I can't wait!
*(Prices next to items refers to an average of what they have gone for on retail sites and eBay. You may find it for less or more.)
10. NECA 1/4 SCALE BAT-FLECK $100
Regardless of what you felt about the film, it is hard to argue that NECA's 1/4 scale "Bat-Fleck" is anything short of awesome. NECA has carved their niche as the go to manufacturers of quarter-scale action figures. And what I love about them is they are fully functional with all the bells & whistles of your average 6 to 8-inch action figures. Articulation, pose-ability, brilliant sculpts, interchangeable hands & extras like a couple of Batarang's and Grappel gun. Fantastic all around.
9. UNMASKED SPIDER-GWEN POP! VINYLS (Walgreens Exclusive) $20
The girl that everyone loves, Gwen Stacey, manages again to make the AFJ TOP 10 in some iteration. This month it is in the HOT TOPIC Unmasked Spider-Gwen POP! Vinyl from FUNKO. $20 may not seem like a lot but that is what a lot of the "sold" listings are going for right now. That's a stellar 100% increase from the regular price of $9.99. I hope I can find one even though I actually dig the masked version better! I hate being a completist....
8. MARVEL LEGENDS NICK FURY $25
What a shock! A MARVEL LEGENDS figure makes the TOP 10. While it has cooled off considerably, it is still a highly coveted figure among Junkies. Why? Two words: Army Builders. That's right, Junkies want a complete S.H.I.E.L.D squadron to take on their plastic enemies. Strange thing is that I really thought that this figure would be a "common," as in peg warmer. But its still hard to find in stores with a lot of Junkies turning to Amazon to get their Fury fix.
7. MARVEL LEGENDS BLACK PANTHER $35
King T'Challa of Wakanda had a good run but plummets from the number one spot after a monster May. Junkies smartly waited this one out and did not fall for the lure of the scalper and pay $100. To be honest, had I not ordered a case that arrived in May, I thought that it was one of the coolest looking Black Panther and overall LEGENDS in the history of the line! And his appearance in the film CIVIL WAR really made him the sleeper character for a lot of MARVEL newbies. I honestly love when new Junkies get into a character that has been around for a considerable amount of time and finally gets his due. Congrats Black Panther, you have arrived and it is well deserved.
6. ELITE SERIES BOBA FETT PROTOTYPE $55
Nothing can stop the Fett! Director Joe Johnston's (The Rocketeer, Captain America: The First Avenger) take on STAR WARS' most iconic bounty hunter. The ELITE SERIES from Disney are the upgrade that the BLACK SERIES needed and they continue to impress me. This version even includes the "cape" that was added in the final version Fett released a few months before. Whichever Fett you like the best, this is definitely one of my favorite all-time Boba's.
Walgreens again usurps the big box chains with yet another Exclusive. Fresh on the scene in the last two weeks of June, Namor floated to the head of the pack with a solid number five slot. My Namor only just arrived yesterday but I think that this is another really solid LEGENDS entry. The sleek design and sculpt modernize the look of the character and it is about time. The color scheme is terrific and the facial sculpt is on point. Plus we get web-like bonus hands and a sweet Trident. Really impressed with this one so go get one today Junkies.
4. DC COLLECTIBLES RED HOOD $25
While I do not think that it is going to outdo last year's RED HOOD, this year's version is still pretty sweet. We gave it the official AFJ REVIEW last week and there was not much I had to say that was negative if anything at all. As someone that is not a gamer, I love the entire ARKHAM line and snatch up pretty much every one that they produce. The RED HOOD has become a cult favorite among Junkies so any new figure of him they make, sign me up.
3. NECA ROCKY 40th ANNIVERSARY CHAMPIONSHIP BELT
No matter what anniversary it is, I buy whatever ROCKY figures are released! They are must haves for me as a huge part of my childhood. The Southpaw from Philadelphia punches his way to a debut in the #3 slot and I couldn't be happier. After thoroughly reviewing the first wave during the week, I have a lot of confidence that this figure is going to be coveted by a lot of Junkies. The last time NECA produced ROCKY figures was 2012 and those prices have increased exponentially. Not that that is the reason I am all in on these, but it is always nice to see something you love appreciate in value.
2. NECA 1/4 SCALE BATMAN BEGINS (BALE) $115
NECA knows they are the big dog when it comes to quarter scale figures as previously discussed in #10. Now, they just released the Christian Bale BATMAN BEGINS and it is completely dope from top to bottom. And it comes with all sorts of bells and whistles too including interchangeable hands and assorted goodies from Bats' utility belt. As a huge fan of the Nolan Trilogy, I can't wait for the next two versions from the subsequent films should NECA make them.
1. MATTYCOLLECTOR FILMATION MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE SKELETOR $100
It bothers me that this Skeletor is number one this month for several reasons. One, MattyCollector.com uses an archaic system to sell their figures once a month. The cap, last I checked is a maximum order of 10 of any one figure. This means that scalpers everywhere can order 3 at a time (at $25 apiece) and leave those that just want a measly ONE out in the cold. Less than 10 minutes and this figure was sold out furthering the website's lack of knowledge of their own fan base. Its a shame because if they lowered the maximum to say 1 per person, they could usher in a lot more Junkies that are frankly turned off that they are foiled every 15th of the month when they attempt to buy their MOTU figures. A change is gonna come I hope.
