AFJ’S 2019 Movie Calendar (From Glass to Star Wars: Episode IX)

It's that time again, Junkies. AFJ looks forward to 2019 and all the movies that are coming our way. With that, we also look at what toy companies will be directly involved. Below we have a list of films* that we are looking forward to in 2019. We have a long list this year, but we run the gauntlet from M. Night Shyamalan's Glass to JJ Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX. Keep in mind that for the majority of the time we can only guess or assume what toy companies will attach themselves to a property. Without a doubt, we expect Funko to be tied to everything. However, the likes of Mattel (see story HERE) are in flux so we may not see as many DC Entertainment figures this year (Shazam! and Joker) as we would like. Also, remember that the year is littered with Pop Culture events such as Toy Fair (February), Star Wars Celebration (April), the San Diego Comic-Con (July), and the New York Comic-Con (October). This means announcements, reveals, and exclusives too will happen at those events. #AFJ4LIFE

*No film's date is set in stone.

Glass

Release Date: January 18, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko (?), Mezco Toyz (?), Sideshow Collectibles (?), Hot Toys(?), NECA(?), Mego(?), Diamond Select Toys(?), McFarlane Toys (?)
Junkie Verdict: Since there were never toys for Unbreakable or Split, this one has to have them, right? We would be happy for a solid film, but toys would be icing on the cake!

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

Release Date: February 8, 2019
Toy Companies: LEGO
Junkie Verdict: It does seem like a long commercial when you realize that only one toy company is going to make toys for this sequel. It looks like fun and we are totally in.

Alita: Battle Angel

Release Date: February 14, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko, Sideshow Collectibles, Hot Toys (see products HERE on AFJ), Mezco Toyz (?)
Junkie Verdict: Thankfully, Fox Consumer Products has already announced several products for the February film. This is, to most people, a new property, hopefully, it's a solid film that can start a new franchise.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

 Release Date: February 22, 2019
Toy Companies: Spin Master, Funko, Sideshow Collectibles (?), Hot Toys (?), NECA (?), McFarlane Toys (?)
Junkie Verdict: Spin Master has crafted How to Train Your Dragon toys in the past, however, this audience has gotten older, perhaps we'll see something new from a different toy company?

Captain Marvel

Release Date: March 8, 2019
Toy Companies: Hasbro, Funko, LEGO, Mezco Toyz, Sideshow Collectibles, Hot Toys, NECA, Diamond Select Toys, Disney Store
Junkie Verdict: This is going to be huge for Marvel Studios and Disney. Expect toys from all the companies posted above. Why? Because they have all crafted something for the MCU in the past.

Us

Release Date: March 15, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko (?), Mezco Toyz (?), NECA (?), Diamond Select Toys (?), McFarlane Toys (?)
Junkie Verdict: Jordan Peel's Get Out was a surprise hit and had no real movie tie-in products. That probably won't be the case here. In fact, we expect to see at least Funko Pop! releases for Get Out before ones for Us arrive.

Captive State

Release Date: March 29, 2019
Toy Companies: ???
Junkie Verdict: It is a new property. We haven't even seen the aliens yet. Who knows what we are going to get.

Dumbo

Release Date: March 29, 2019
Toy Companies: Disney Store, Funko, Diamond Select Toys (?)
Junkie Verdict: Disney will release product for both their new film and the 1941 original. Diamond Select Toys has released some fantastic Disney products in the past. If you are looking for a good centerpiece to your Dumbo collection, they will probably deliver it.

Shazam!

Release Date: April 5, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko, Mezco Toyz, Sideshow Collectibles, Hot Toys, Mattel, NECA, Mego (?), Diamond Select Toys, DC Collectibles
Junkie Verdict: Mego is the only one of the list above that we aren't sure on. Will they release Shazam in their 14-inch line? Add to the mix that this will be the second to last big movie tie-in for Mattel, how much or how little will they produce for this movie? Personally, we are expecting some stellar DC Collectibles for this one.

Pet Semetary

Release Date: April 5, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko (?), Mezco Toyz(?), NECA (?), McFarlane Toys (?)
Junkie Verdict: Toy Fair will reveal who will be producing Pet Sematary toys and action figures. It may sound strange for a Rated R Stephen King film to get them, but it will.

Hellboy

Release Date: April 12, 2019
Toy Companies: Dark Horse Direct, Funko, Mezco Toyz, Sideshow Collectibles, Hot Toys, Mego (?)
Junkie Verdict: Well that trailer looked like fun, but it did not set the world on fire. It will be tough see David Harbour instead of Ron Perlman, almost as if this will be this generation's James Bond switch. Mezco Toyz has done Hellboy toys in the past and Dark Horse Direct is tied to the property, those are safe bets.

Avengers: End Game

Release Date: April 26, 2019
Toy Companies: Hasbro, LEGO, Funko, Mezco Toyz, Sideshow Collectibles, Hot Toys, NECA, Diamond Select Toys
Junkie Verdict: There will be so much to buy. Thankfully, with the movie arriving in April, and Toy Fair dropping in February, there will only be a few characters kept under wraps.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu

Release Date: May 10, 2019
Toy Companies: Good Smile Company, S.H. Figuarts, Bandai, Mattel, Funko (?)
Junkie Verdict: All of the companies have made toys for the Pokemon property in the past. We expect the movie to have a good opening weekend, but it is still two weeks out after Avengers: Endgame. It might be forgotten.

John Wick 3: Parabellum
Release Date: May 17, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko, Mezco Toyz, Sideshow Collectibles, Hot Toys, Mego (?), Diamond Select Toys
Junkie Verdict: We saw toys before from all the companies above except Mego. This would be their newest property to tackle. It would do really well, as the movie will too.

Aladdin
 Release Date: May 24, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko, Diamond Select Toys, Disney Store, LEGO
Junkie Verdict: Aladdin and The Lion King will probably have some original cartoon property tie-ins like Beauty and the Beast did. We aren't 100% sure that these two will play as well as their original counterparts.

Godzilla: King of Monsters

Release Date: May 31, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko (?), NECA, LEGO (?)
Junkie Verdict: It would be awesome to finally see some LEGO themed Godzilla toys. We know we will get more NECA releases and we are more than fine with that. Something new would be nice though.

Dark Phoenix

Release Date: June 7, 2019
Toy Companies: Hasbro, Funko, Mezco Toyz, Sideshow Collectibles, Hot Toys, NECA, Diamond Select Toys,
Junkie Verdict: This is a tough one to call. Every company above has released some incarnation of the X-Men before. With the film being pushed back, we have to ask, how many tie-in products are just sitting in a warehouse, now? Will these toys clog the toy shelves if the film bombs?

Men In Black: International

Release Date: June 14, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko (?), Mezco Toyz(?), Sideshow Collectibles(?), Hot Toys(?), NECA(?), Mego (?), Diamond Select Toys (?)
Junkie Verdict: Another tough one as it is the fourth installment and a bit of a reboot, for toys. The film looks like fun though.

Toy Story 4

Release Date: June 21, 2019
Toy Companies: Thinkway Toys, Funko, Disney Store, LEGO
Junkie Verdict: This could be, probably not, the last hoorah for Woody, Buzz, and the gang. We expect to see a lot of merchandise for the film. Thinkway Toys will be bringing back their classic toys and the new characters, however, we are certain LEGO will return with a few more products.

Spider-Man: Far From Home
Release Date: July 5, 2019
Toy Companies: Hasbro, Funko, Sideshow Collectibles, Hot Toys, NECA, Diamond Select Toys
Junkie Verdict: Bring it on, we need more Spider-Man toys! Just please stay away from things Spider-Man never uses, like airplanes, helicopters, and jet boats.

The Lion King

Release Date: July 19, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko, Diamond Select Toys, Disney Store
Junkie Verdict: Again, will it play well for a new generation? the GenXers and the Baby Boomers don't seem to want or need a live action version.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Release Date: July 26, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko (?), Mezco Toyz (?), Sideshow Collectibles (?), Hot Toys (?), NECA (?), McFarlane Toys (?)
Junkie Verdict: Rated R Quintin Tarantino films have spawned action figures in the past. However, they are usually very limited in production.

The New Mutants

Release Date: August 2, 2019
Toy Companies: Hasbro, Funko, Mezco Toyz, Sideshow Collectibles, Hot Toys, NECA (?), Diamond Select Toys
Junkie Verdict: Another product that Disney had no say in and one they delayed too for some retooling. We are certain that some version of the New Mutants will appear in the Marvel Legends line. It probably won't be in their movie likeness.

It: Chapter Two
Release Date:  September 6, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko, NECA, Loyal Subjects
Junkie Verdict: We shall certainly see more of Pennywise, but how many more do we actually need?

Zombieland 2
Release Date: October (?) 2019
Toy Companies: ???
Junkie Verdict: The film doesn't even have an official release date so the likelihood of toys, other than that of Funko POP! grows thinner by the day.

Joker
Release Date: October 4, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko, Mezco Toyz, Sideshow Collectibles, Hot Toys, Mattel, NECA, Mego, DC Collectibles
Junkie Verdict: This will be the last big Mattel release. We expect only one maybe two Jokers in his movie likeness to emerge from the line. The rest be will Jokers from all his different incarnations. Which we are fine with.

Untitled Terminator Film
Release Date: November 1, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko(?), Mezco Toyz (?), Sideshow Collectibles (?), Hot Toys (?), NECA
Junkie Verdict: NECA is currently cranking out Terminator figures, so that company is a lock for the new film. As for the others, we don't expect too much as this franchise is just so tired.

Kingsmen 3
Release Date: November 8, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko
Junkie Verdict: Funko is a lock, but does anyone really care more about this franchise, especially with toys.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Release Date: November 15, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko (?), Mezco Toyz (?), Sideshow Collectibles (?), Hot Toys (?), Mattel (?), NECA (?), Diamond Select Toys (?), McFarlane Toys (?)
Junkie Verdict: We generations of gamers wanting something new, Sonic could bursts unto the scene with merchandise in a big way.

Frozen 2
Release Date: November 27, 2019
Toy Companies: Funko, Disney Store, Diamond Select Toys (?)
Junkie Verdict: It will have been 6 years since the original Frozen film was in theaters. Their fan base has grown up, just a little, have they let it go, yet?

Star Wars: Episode IX
Release Date: December 20, 2019
Toy Companies: Hasbro, Funko, Sideshow Collectibles, Hot Toys, Disney Store, LEGO
Junkie Verdict: The end of the Skywalker Saga. It will be truly interesting to see where the franchise goes next.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
