Welcome, Junkies, to AFJ's Primer. What does a "Primer" mean to AFJ and its readers? It is our quick rundown of all the players involved in a current film or television series. This way you are in the know for your next Junkie discussion. For our latest Primer, we have given you a breakdown of characters and actors in Captain Marvel. Now there are characters who are obvious. For example, Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) is played by Brie Larson. However, when it comes to Minn-erva (now known as Doctor Minerva ), you might be asking who? Enjoy, Junkies, and we have kept it spoiler free as we have not seen the film yet. FYI we also left the cat, Goose, off the list.  #AFJ4LIFE

CAPTAIN MARVEL / CAROL DANVERS
First Comic Book Appearance: Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (March, 1968)
First MCU Appearance: Avengers: Infinity War (symbol only) / Captain  Marvel (2019)
Actor: Brie Larson
Best Known For: Ma, Room (2015)
The Gist: After Brie Larson won the Academy Award, for Room,  we were thrilled to learn that she was talking the title role in the film. Word has it that she, her character, will be leading the MCU, officially, for the next phase. Captain Marvel is also slated to appear in Avengers: Endgame

MINN-ERVA
First Comic Book Appearance: Captain Marvel #50 (May, 1977)
First MCU Appearance: Captain Marvel (2019)
Actor: Gemma Chan
Best Known For: Mia/ Anita, Humans (2015-2018)
The Gist: She is a member of Starforce, in the film, and little else is known about her cinematic appearance. Marvel and Disney have really kept a tight lip on things this time around. Her current alias, in the comics, is Doctor Minerva. She has a history with Mar-Vell, who as far as we know is not in this film.

TALOS
First Comic Book Appearance: Incredible Hulk #418 (June, 1994)
First MCU Appearance: Captain Marvel (2019)
Actor: Ben Mendelsohn
Best Known For: Director Krennick, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2015)
The Gist: In the Marvel Comics Universe, Talos is a Skrull who cannot shapeshift... hmmm... looks as if they may not apply here. The character is tied to the Fantastic Four's villain Annihilus, so perhaps, one way or the other, we may see Talos again if he doesn't make it out of the Captain Marvel film.

NICK FURY
First Comic Book Appearance:
Sgt Fury and his Howling Commandos #1 (May, 1963)
First MCU Appearance: Iron Man (2008)
Actor: Samuel L. Jackson
Best Known For: Jules, Pulp Fiction (1994)
The Gist: Again, Marvel is going to de-age one of its actors with computer technology. It looks as if we may learn how he lost his eye, in the MCU, but, more importantly, we may learn the foundation of "There was an idea [...] called the Avengers Initiative. The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people to see if they could become something more".

RONAN
First Comic Book Appearance: Fantastic Four #6 (August, 1967)
First MCU Appearance: Guardians fo the Galaxy (2014)
Actor: Lee Pace
Best Known For: Thandrall, The Hobbit Trilogy
The Gist: In making the film a prequel, prior to the events of Iron Man (2008), Marvel Studios can bring back heavy hitters like Ronan (last seen losing a dance-off against Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1). Will Thanos also make an appearance?

YON-ROGG
First Comic Book Appearance:
Marvel Super-Heroes #12 (December, 1967)
First MCU Appearance: Captain Marvel (2019)
Actor: Jude Law
Best Known For: Dickie, The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
The Gist: Is he actually Mar-Vell? A lot of rumors are circulating that Law's character is actually a combination of Mar-Vell and Yon-Rogg (currently known as Magnitron). Law is not a MEGA star, but recognizable enough to warrant a prominent role in the MCU.

SUPREME INTELLIGENCE
First Comic Book Appearance: Fantastic Four #65 (August, 1967)
First MCU Appearance: Captain Marvel (2019)
Actor: Annette Bening
Best Known For: Carolyn, American Beauty (1999)
The Gist: In case you haven't noticed, we have supplied numerous comic book representations of the characters in this primer. Yes, that is a giant green floating head with tendrils coming out of it for the Supreme Intelligence. Are we seeing a different form for Bening's character or perhaps she will transform into this the character we know from the comics?

KORATH
First Comic Book Appearance:
Quasar #32 (March, 1992)
First MCU Appearance: Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Actor: Djimon Hounsou
Best Known For: Juba, Gladiator (2000)
The Gist: Another member of Starforce, however, we know Korath from the opening robbery of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1. Did you notice that the mechanical headpiece is absent in the Captain Marvel poster? Just how long will he be a part of Starforce? What are his true intentions?

AGENT COULSON
First Comic Book Appearance: Battle Scars #1 (January, 2012)
First MCU Appearance: Iron Man (2008)
Actor: Clark Gregg
Best Known For: Coulson, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (TV series)
The Gist: A perennial favorite with the MCU fans, we will now see Agent Coulson prior to the events of Iron Man (2008). We're gambling that he is a Skrull sleeper agent. Imagine the shakeup that would bring to the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series!

BRON-CHARR
First Comic Book Appearance: Captain America Vol 3 #8 (August, 1998)
First MCU Appearance: Captain Marvel (2019)
Actor: Rune Temte
Best Known For: Ubba, The Last Kingdom (2015)
The Gist: Marvel Studios has kept some of these lesser-known characters off the radar of the Internet. Case in point, Bron-Charr. All we could find on him is that he once destroyed Captain America's shield (it was a replica). As for the film, he will be a member of Starforce.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
