AFJ’S SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING PRIMER

Welcome Junkies to AFJ's first Primer. What does a "Primer" mean to AFJ and its readers? It is our quick rundown of all the players involved in a current film or Television series. This way you are in the know for your next Junkie discussion. For our first Primer, we decided to give you a breakdown of all the characters and actors in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Now there are characters who are obvious. For example, Iron Man (Tony Stark) is played by Robert Downey Jr. However, when it comes to Phineas Mason you might be asking who? We are throwing out an early warning that there are some SPOILERS near the bottom of this Primer. Rest assured we have it clearly marked. #AFJ4Life

Spider-Man/ Peter ParkerFirst Comic Book Appearance: Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962)
First MCU Appearance: Masked in Iron Man 2 (2010), full appearance: Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Actor: Tom Holland
The Gist: Holland will reprise his role from Civil War here as the Web-Slinger. He is also slated to appear in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Spider-Man: Homecoming 2.

Vulture/ Adrian Toomes
First Comic Book Appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #2 (1963)
First MCU Appearance: Spider-Man: Home Coming (2017)
Actor: Michael Keaton
The Gist: The one time Batman and Birdman is now donning the wings of one of Spider-Man's oldest villains. This will be the first time the character has been on the big screen.

Iron Man/ Tony StarkFirst Comic Book Appearance: Tales of Suspense #39 (1963)
First MCU Appearance: Iron Man (2008)
Actor: Robert Downey Jr.
The Gist: RDJ returns for yet another appearance in the role he will forever be synonymous with. Expect to see less of him than what the trailers indicate.

May Parker
First Comic Book Appearance: Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962)
First MCU Appearance: Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Actress: Marisa Tomei
The Gist: Marvel has really shifted gears with this hotter and younger portrayal of Peter’s Aunt. We have no complaints.

Happy Hogan
First Comic Book Appearance: Tales of Suspense #45 (1963)
First MCU Appearance: Iron Man (2008)
Actor: Jon Favreau
The Gist: Who knew his small role in the first Iron Man would boom into a regular MCU character.

Ned

First Comic Book Appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #18 (1963)
First MCU Appearance: Spider-Man: Home Coming (2017)
Also Known As: Possibly Ned Leeds (The Hobgoblin)
Actor: Jacob Batlon
The Gist: Could Peter’s buddy one day become the Hobgoblin? Don’t expect to see him riding a goblin glider anytime soon.

Liz

First Comic Book Appearance: Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962)
First MCU Appearance: Spider-Man: Home Coming (2017)
Also Known As: Possibly Liz Allan
Actress: Laura Harrier
The Gist: One of Peter’s oldest and dearest friends. Can the MCU version of Liz escape the tragedies of the comic book character’s?

FlashFirst Comic Book Appearance: Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962)
First MCU Appearance: Spider-Man: Home Coming (2017)
Also Known As: Possibly Flash Thompson (Agent Venom)
Actor: Tony Revolori
The Gist: An interesting choice and very different from what we have seen before. Again, another one of Peter’s friends who has more than enough problems because of their association with Spider-Man.

The Shocker #1 and Shocker #2
First Comic Book Appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #46 (1967)
First MCU Appearance: Spider-Man: Home Coming (2017)
Actors: Logan Marshall- and Bokeem Woodbine
The Gist: The first cinematic appearance of the Shocker and he is played by two different guys. Could this be a trend for smaller characters in Spider-Man's MCU rogue gallery?

Betty
First Comic Book Appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #4 (1963)
First MCU Appearance: Spider-Man: Home Coming (2017)
Also Known As: Betty Brant
Actress: Angourie Rice
The Gist: A smaller character in Spider-Man’s long history. I wouldn't expect anything more than a background character out of her.

Phineas Mason
First Comic Book Appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #2 (1963)
First MCU Appearance: Spider-Man: Home Coming (2017)
Also Known As: The Tinkerer
Actor: Michael Chernus
The Gist: A long time adversary of old Web-Head. Having Mason established in the MCU opens a lot of possibilities. Hopefully, they will have him crossover to the Netflix series.

Captain America/ Steve Rogers

First MCU Appearance: Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Actor: Chris Evans
The Gist: Yep, that’s him.

First MCU Appearance: Iron Man (2008)

First MCU Appearance: Spider-Man: Home Coming (2017)
Also Known As: Mary Jane Watson (MJ to her friends)

The Gist: This could be Peter’s potential love interest for subsequent films. However, there is still Gwen Stacey and Pete might have his hands full teaming up with Avengers.

Mac Gargan
