Welcome to AFJ's "Top 10 Action Figures Over $100" for 2018. Each year we look back at what industry had to offer us. It was a tough year as Toys R Us closed its doors in June and we were suddenly without our beloved Geoffrey. We preserved and discovered new venues to toy hunt at, GameStop being our new favorite. Below you will find our Top 10 figures over $100. Yes, there is an under $100 list (HERE). Many of these figures came and went so quickly, that if we were to adjust the list for the secondary market, many would be on the over $200 list. We want your picks and criticisms in the comment section below! #AFJ4LIFE
The list was compiled by MJ Ortiz, Rick Alaia, Jason Nelson, and Robert Trate.
Justice League - Batman (Tactical Batsuit Version)- Hot Toys - $266.00
There wasn't much to get too excited about for the Justice League movie except the tie-ins. The Tactical Batsuit Batman by Hot Toys showed more love for the property than the makers of the film ever did. Thankfully, those that of that truly care about Batman can have a Hot Toy worthy of his name.
One:12 Collective - Thor: Ragnarok -Mezco Toyz - $125.00
There were many of us here at AFJ that liked what Mezco Toyz was producing with their One:12 line, but we weren't 100% sure about making the plunge. That all changed when we saw the Thor: Ragnarok Hulk. Wow. We were teased this one in 2017, but to have him in hand in 2018, reaffirmed that we made the right decision on going all in on the One:12 line.
SDCC 2018 Exclusive - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4-Pack with VHS Packaging - NECA - $150.00
There was a lot to say about NECA's SDCC TMNT exclusive box set and boy did we say it. It set AFJ's Facebook Group on fire with getting one and not be able to get one. We addressed these issues and the problems that many of you had (Seen HERE). We also got the chance to review this set (Seen HERE). It was impressive, however, if you missed it, GameStop released each figure individually. The box and a few additional accessories though, made this one the one to have.
SDCC 2018 Exclusive - TMNT Street Scene Diorama - NECA - $150.00
Thankfully NECA is one of the few companies to produce dioramas for 6 to 8-inch action figures. This one, like the VHS exclusive action figure set (seen above), was also an exclusive for Comic-Con. It went quick and it also became a hot topic of conversation.
One:12 Collective - Ghostbusters Deluxe Box Set - Mezco Toys - $300
This set has been teased and displayed for some time now. It finally went up for pre-order and sold in a flash (despite the price). We thought about moving it to 2019, as our One:12s are not in hand yet, but considering Mezco got our money already for Peter, Ray, Egon, Winston, and Slimer in 2018, we're placing it in the Top 10 Over $100 for 2018. This will be a tough review as opening it will be the great dilemma.
Batman - Batman: The Animated Series - 1/6 Scale - Mondo Exclusive - $150.00
Not only did this 12-inch version of Batman, from the iconic Batman: The Animated Series feature over 30 points of articulation, multiple switch-out hands, heads, accessories, and a Bat Symbol figure stand, he also weighed 9 pounds! The version above was the Mondo Exclusive which featured a switch-out wind-swept cape, goggles, unique "Thumbs-Up of Bat Approval" hand, unique Batarang, and a switch-out H.A.R.D.A.C. head. There was a Mister Freeze (seen HERE) released as well, but he is nothing without the Dark Knight. Mondo nailed it and the $150 price tag was well worth it. FYI, its sold out (see additional details HERE).
The Iron Giant - Riobot Iron Giant - Sentinal - $109.99
Brad Bird's Iron Giant has always been beloved by fans, however, it seems to have had a renaissance as of late gaining even more followers. Having appeared in both Bird's Tomorrow Land as well as in Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One, the Iron Giant keeps gaining new notoriety as well as new toys. This latest rendition by Sentinal may only be a little over 6 inches tall, but has incredible details and a multitude of articulation.
Sauron - Marvel Legends - Deadpool Wave 2 (Build-A-Figure) - Hasbro - $119.94
Sauron was the Build-A-Figure from the Deadpool Marvel Legends 6-Inch Action Figures Wave 2 (order HERE) set. When he was first announced at Toy Fair 2018, there was a hush over the crowd. It was one of great awe. We thought very little of it, then we saw him built, wow. Never before did we want the pterodactyl man from the X-Men, there was a Toy Biz version. We then we found ourselves out hunting the second Deadpool wave. Which brings us to the added bonus that this wave of Marvel Legends as it had no duds or "meh" characters. In fact, they were all Junkie worthy!
Marvel Legends Series - Infinity Gauntlet - Hasbro - $100.00
End of the year lists usually overlook early items from the year as we have long forgotten them. That could also be said about the Marvel Legend Series Infinity Gauntlet. This was the hottest of the hot items back in the late winter/ early spring of 2018. Everyone wanted one leading up to Avengers: Infinity War. Now, today, they are starting to appear for less than their actual price, that doesn't diminish our love for Thanos' left-hand accessory. Check out our full video review HERE.
One:12 Collective - Cyclops - Mezco Toyz - $100.00
This Mezco One:12 release was truly a cut above of the rest. First and foremost, Mezco made one of the most disliked characters in the Marvel Universe a must-have figure (Scott's gone rogue from the X-Men, FYI). For their second trick, they actually placed Cyclops in his '90s X-Men garb (cartoon and comic), complete with removable leather jacket. Bravo! For their final feat, Mezco made Cyclops' optic blast a light up feature (did you see the size of the optic blast BTW)! A bit more, dollar wise, for this One:12 but completely worth it. Damn you Mezco! Join the wait list for one HERE.
