So I am a few days late in getting my list of AFJ'S TOP 10 HOTTEST FIGURES OF OCTOBER on to the website but in my defense, it was a crazy week with the death of an old friend, making amends with my brother/AFJ's in-house artist Jason and being asked to write a super important blog for a super important company. Keep your fingers crossed for me Junkies, I need your prayers! Since I am late already, let's just dive right in and as requested we are going to go from numbers 10 to 1, this way you have to wait for the big reveal of number 1 on the list. Unless you scroll down immediately and spoil it for yourself. So here it is, AFJ'S TOP HOTTEST FIGURES OF OCTOBER just a few days late!
10. ALIEN VS. PREDATOR 7-INCH ACTION FIGURE 2-PACK WITH MINI COMIC ($43.99)
Fans just cannot seem to get enough of ALIEN or the PREDATOR. When you mix the two together, you know you've got a winner. This TOYS R US Exclusive is still available at a very reasonable retail price of $43.99 in a special edition action figure 2-pack. The bonus is that it is a 21-year old tribute to the pairing from the 1994 Kenner toy line, the company that has long since gone the way of the dodo. For just $44 clams, you get a pretty sweet Renegade Predator with an all-new paint job featuring brown armor. The PREDATOR also is complete with rifle, blade, and both interchangeable masked and unmasked heads. The 1979 "Big Chap" ALIEN body is boasting a black dome and even darker black decoration. Both figures stand a towering 7" with over 25 points of articulation. Throw in a mini-comic from the DARK HORSE original and you've got a real winner here.
9. MARVEL SELECT HULKBUSTER ($40)
HULKBUSTER continues to reign in 2015 even six months after AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON hit theaters. While Junkies kept looking for the HULKBUSTER BUILD-A-FIGURE pieces, some forgot to pick up the hottest MARVEL SELECT of the year and now it is going for about $40...if you can find it. While not quite similar to the movie version the way the BAF figure is, this is still an awesome addition to your SELECT collection. I happen to love the MARVEL SELECT's in their oversized packaging and are easier than ever to find now that they are available at DISNEY STORE's around the country. Still, while Junkies are still putting their BAF's together, the SELECT HULKBUSTER continues to do pretty well and it is easily my favorite oversized mass produced figure from MARVEL in 2015.
8. LOOT CRATE WITH POP! VINYL 1955 BACK TO THE FUTURE DOC BROWN & MINI-HOVERBOARD REPLICA (WITH COA) ($45)
Well, this was my month to join LOOT CRATE because the theme was "Time" and I had a sneaking suspicion that they were going to include something from my beloved BACK TO THE FUTURE. My instincts paid off and now I have my Exclusive POP! VINYL 1955 BACK TO THE FUTURE DOC BROWN (with goggles and wire connectors) and a 2015 mini-Hoverboard for my desk complete with a Certificate of Authenticity. All for just $19.95, my investment has already doubled with eBay sellers asking for twice that at the minimum. Happy 30th Birthday BTTF!
7. NECA's ULTIMATE T2 JUDGMENT DAY T-800 FIGURE ($23)
I just wrote a super detailed, blow-by-blow review about this figure last week and my outlook has not changed. NECA continues to blow me away with their attention to detail and their hyper-awareness of what Junkies are looking for in the figures that they lay their hard-earned dollars down to purchase. There simply could not be a better T-800 figure from the seminal action film of the '90s, especially at this price point. The amount you get for the money you spend is insane. The extras, the weapons, the three interchangeable heads, this figure has it all! And prepare yourself because number six on our list is also another gem from NECA!
6. NECA's ULTIMATE JOHN MATRIX COMMANDO 30th ANNIVERSARY ($35)
30 years I waited and it was worth it because the payoff is unbelievable. Already in the last week, I have seen NECA's new 30th ANNIVERSARY COMMANDO figure jump almost $15 dollars in price, which I wrote a more in-depth review last week. Boasting over 25 points of articulation and having the best likeness of Arnold that I have ever encountered, this figure is firing all cylinders setting the bar for any new figures of Schwarzenegger. (I just pray they don't ever make a figure of him in the awful pregnant man movie, JUNIOR). It was a long wait and I am glad that it is over but man, did NECA hit it out of the park with this new addition.
5. BATMAN: ARKHAM KNIGHT PLAY ARTS KAI ACTION FIGURE ($99.99)
If you waited an extra three months for the 7-inch version of the ARKHAM KNIGHT figure from DC COLLECTIBLES like I did, you can imagine the people that had to wait around for this beauty. PLAY ARTS KAI does it again outdoing the video game itself with this beautiful piece that is almost a foot tall! It is emblazoned with the special "A" from the game which you can read about in my review about the smaller version. This giant figure has all sorts of goodies and realistic features along with a variety of textures including a helmet that features a translucent visor. You get not one but two helmet pieces that are interchangeable including one that gives that cool glowing look from the video game. You want weapons you say? How about a sniper rifle, 2 handguns and a total of three sets of hands for those crazy action poses you will definitely be making with this figure and taking pics of because if ever there was a figure to photograph, it is this one-foot-tall beast.
4. BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES BATMOBILE VEHICLE WITH LIGHTS ($85)
90's Batman Animated fans can rejoice because the real deal is finally here to purchase! Die-hard fans of both BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES & THE NEW BATMAN ADVENTURES can strap in and prepare for the ride of their lives (well, their figures can) with this monster two-foot long recreation of the cartoon vehicle behemoth. This Bat-giant practically needs its own Batcave that features light-up headlights, breaks, an engine and independently moving wheels. This is a steal at just $85 and with the holidays coming up, major online retailers are sure to be competing for the best prices and enticing us with FREE SHIPPING! This Batmobile even fits two of your favorite figures (naturally not included) right into the cockpit of the iconic vehicle. Very cool and sure to be a best-seller.
3. STAR WARS BLACK SERIES CAPTAIN PHASMA ($35)
You didn't really think that we could get through an AFJ TOP 10 without there being at least one STAR WARS figure, did you? Well, you are in luck because two of the top three are from a galaxy far, far away. First up is the continually elusive BLACK SERIES CAPTAIN PHASMA from Hasbro. Report after report pile in on the AFJ Facebook page every day that Junkies have come up empty yet again after an all-day hunt. I think that it is funny too that the mostly male fan base is chasing after a FEMALE character! The first real main character since Princess Leia, CAPTAIN PHASMA is played by none other than GAME OF THRONES' statuesque Gwendoline Christie who you may know better as Brienne of Tarth. We really know nothing about PHASMA the character and her role in EPISODE VII except that she is a bad guy. However, all fans know is that they must have her in 6-inch form from the coveted BLACK SERIES that has redefined STAR WARS figures yet again. Hunt my Junkie friends, hunt. And do not give up. The only reason I found mine was because an App on my phone said it was in-stock at the TARGET I was in, but it was not on the pegs. Sure enough, a Yoda of sorts went in the back and got it for me--case fresh. Keep looking Junkies. Remember what Master Yoda said, "Do or do not, there is no try." DON'T GIVE IN TO HATE!! (IN THIS CASE, TO SCALPERS!)
2. DISNEY STAR WARS ELITE SERIES GENERAL GRIEVOUS ($80-$100)
If you had told me a year ago that the DISNEY STORE was going to give Hasbro's STAR WARS BLACK SERIES figures a run for their money once EPISODE VII merchandise went on sale, I would have told you had Alderaan information. However a year later, Junkies are running back and forth to malls across America, knocking over Mickey and Minnie and wading through kids dressing up as their favorite princesses for a shot to get the new die-cast ELITE SERIES from DISNEY. After the first six "core" figures that I had no idea about on FORCE FRIDAY, they set up a schedule where new characters are available every two weeks at DISNEY STORES where they hold a lottery. However, even if you lose out on the lottery, you can pick them up online the next day so it is fair for everybody. The most recent one to be released is EPISODE III's GENERAL GRIEVOUS and this figure is hotter than a pistol right now. I have already seen them go for as high as a $100 on the secondary market for those that did not click in time two weeks ago. I think there are a couple of reasons why Grievous is so hot right now. First of all, the guy has four lightsabers which raise the coolness factor by, well, four. Second, because of his size and odd shape, he is the only ELITE SERIES to be made yet that has very different looking packaging. Instead of the regular square and stackable figures, this one is almost in a shell shape to accommodate Grievous' odd size. Whatever the reason, I seriously love this figure and sensed that it was going to go up in price fairly quickly. Those that want this under the Christmas tree or by the Hanukkah bush may have to pay big bucks. Outstanding presentation on what I think is one of the most underrated characters in the STAR WARS canon.
1. GAMESTOP EXCLUSIVE RED HOOD ACTION FIGURE ($130)
Who knew that GAMESTOP would become a major player in action figure distribution with Exclusives of their own? Like Barnes & Noble, where its hard to even find a book in anymore, GAMESTOP has capitalized on the figure market specifically making Exclusives from action figures to POP! Vinyls. Although this awesome figure came out some time ago, I think that the new BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY video game has given it a push PLUS there is another RED HOOD figure coming out in just a few months that I am pre-ordering now just to be safe and I advise all Junkies to do the same! If this number one surprised you, believe you me, I was just as surprised after doing my usual thorough homework. Well, that's all folks. For the lucky few that have all ten on the list, congrats. For those still on the hunt, stay strong, keep your eyes out for trades and do your research before you leave the house because sometimes, you don't even need to. And remember, if you are on the main Facebook AFJ page, we help each other out especially this time of year. See you next month!
