AFJ'S TOP 10 PRE-ORDERS!
By Jarrett Kruse
It is officially my favorite time of the Junkie calendar with the weeks leading up to Toy Fair '17 littered with sneak peeks and reveals. Toy Fair has become the official Super Bowl of our industry. So, while Narrasoft & I have been hard at work on the new AFJ website, I had completely forgot about my my favorite side hobby of collecting--pre-ordering! So with that being said, lets dive right in to some of AFJ's official pics as figures you are going to want to add to your ever expanding collections.
10. MARVEL LEGENDS BLACK PANTHER (WALMART EXCLUSIVE)
Okay so technically you cannot pre-order this one just yet but I couldn't resist. The King of Wakanda stole the show in CIVIL WAR and had a super-popular MCU LEGENDS figure in 2016. However, HASBRO went back to the well and decided that one of their 2017 WALMART Exclusives would be an epic, comic book based T'Challa. It really looks like a dope sculpt with lots of accessories so I am excited for this figure to hit shelves. And it reminds me of a suped-up version of the bare bones Black Panther LEGENDS figure.
9. STAR WARS BLACK SERIES: LANDO CALRISSIAN
The smoothest cat in Cloud City is finally getting his own iteration in the storied STAR WARS BLACK SERIES line. Lando and his mythical status in the STAR WARS canon has been galvanized by the casting of Donald Glover playing a young Lando in the upcoming Han Solo standalone film. Still, their will only be one Billy Dee so Glover has to live up to the rare pirate that can pull off a blue cape. And we are finally getting a BLACK SERIES figure of Lando, hopefully before we find out what ever happened to him in December's THE LAST JEDI. No word yet on when this wave is hitting stores or online but we should know by Toy Fair.
8. PLAY ARTS KAI MARVEL UNIVERSE VARIANT WOLVERINE ($149.99)
SQUARE-ENIX's PLAY ARTS KAI line is for serious Junkies only and this new Wolverine piece is pretty damn epic. It may be on the hefty price tag side but this piece comes with an extra dose of awesome. That means extra Katana's, interchangeable hands, head and towers at over 10-inches tall. I love how they captured Wolverine's feral nature in this sculpt and the realism of the color palette. Snikt, indeed.
7. MARVEL LEGENDS OLD MAN LOGAN ($19.99)
Its OLD MAN LOGAN in 6-inch MARVEL LEGENDS form in the same year we are getting an (Old Man) LOGAN film. As Stan Lee would say, "'Nuff Said."
6. NECA ROCKY 40th ANNIVERSARY WAVE 2 ROCKY IV APOLLO CREED ($19.99)
Anyone that knows me in person or from AFJ knows that I live and die for the ROCKY movies. I have always been connected to the movie since it was released the year I was born and I followed it throughout my adulthood as the story continues to unfold. And to have NECA have the action figure license is absolutely gravy for this Balboaholic. Their long awaited second wave of figures is slated for the next month with the highlight being this ROCKY IV Apollo Creed from right before he is killed by Ivan Drago. This is already Pre-Sold Out on some of the larger toy e-tailers so keep your eyes peeled on Amazon or at your LCS. Yo.
5. GHOSTBUSTERS SELECT SERIES 5 ($22.99 apiece or $65.99 for the case of 3)
The GHOSTBUSTERS figures from DIAMOND SELECT continue to capture the magic of the, gulp, 33-year old original film. These are the figures I have been waiting for for decades and Wave 5 brings us three of the most iconic ghosts in cinema history! You get the TAXI DRIVER GHOST, LIBRARY GHOST & a TERROR DOG. Naturally, Junkies are ordering multiple TERROR DOG's in order to show off the most epic rooftop diorama ever conceived when DIAMOND SELECT took on this project. Well done.
4. S.H. FIGUARTS SUICIDE SQUAD HARLEY QUINN ($59.99)
Has anyone else noticed the serious butt that FIGUARTS has been kicking as of late? I know that a few retailers online have this in stock but others I trust more have March as the release date on this movie HARLEY QUINN. The figure is beautiful in person and manages to capture Margot Robbie's Harley in a HOT TOYS-manner. Yes, FIGUARTS pieces are getting just that damn good at a reasonable price point.
3. NECA 1/4 SCALE RAPHAEL ($99.99)
The Quarter-Scale Kings aka New Jersey-based NECA has won the hearts and cash of Junkies with their long awaited adaptations of the 1990's TMNT movies. These figures somehow manage to pull off the task of making those two somewhat campy films from the early 90's look completely badass with attitude. Now that DONATELLO has consistently increased in price, my suggestion is to pick this up now before Junkies start trying to buy all four Turtles at once.
2. DC TV COLLECTIBLES ZOOM ($27.99)
I have been waiting for a really solid ZOOM figure from DC since he made his debut on THE FLASH. I loved the way the baddies look translated perfectly to the small screen and I honestly do not think that a movie version could compare. Lots of what we have come to expect from the gang at DC COLLECTIBLES in this figure as the LA-based company has continually stepped up their game in the 6-7 inch figure department.
1. MEZCO ONE:12 COLLECTIVE SPIDER-MAN ($80)
Junkies are abuzz with the awesomeness that is the ONE:12 COLLECTIVE from MEZCO. One way to win me over as a collector is to make a new and inventive Spider-Man figure. Another way is to make the ultimate Spider-Man figure with webbing, eight interchangeable hands, crazy articulation, stunning cloth costumes and all the extras you can imagine for just $80. Well done Mez. And Co.
DC FILMS PREMIUM BATMAN V SUPERMAN-DOJ BATMAN ($39.99)
The only reason this slipped a spot is because DOJ is a 2016 film and a lot of us have moved on to new properties. However, DC FILMS figures are serious business for Junkies and this is the one that I have been waiting for. The increase in quality for the "Premium" figures is really pretty fantastic and I am a huge fan of the "caping" as I call it where they have manipulated the cape so you can kind of mold it how you want it to look. Very cool feature. This is due out in March as of press time.
