We are officially into Autumn and I am craving for some Brach's Candy Corn. Not to eat, but as ammo, in case I have to take out a fellow Junkie in the figure aisle! Man, there is a lot going on this month and it was literally down to the wire for the winner of the #1 AFJ's HOTTEST. But that has become the figure game for all of us--it is cutthroat out there with Junkies putting the pedal to the metal to get to the store in time. Yesterday when I called the Disney Store to see if they had any ELITE SERIES DARTH MAUL's left, they said they had four left. It was 2:30, I was working on a story and still in my PJ's; I'm sorry, "sleeping pants." I darted to my mall with the dexterity of someone that thinks a 5K is a soda size they should make at 7-11. Point is I got one without a coronary! (Then, of course, today you could get one online for the same price.) My point is, Junkies are fast and furiously becoming a force to be reckoned with even if it is not TICKLE ME ELMO or a CABBAGE PATCH KID. And now that STAR WARS is back, STAR WARS is back. We might as well as start calling it the TOP TEN STAR WARS list. Without any further ado, here is September's JUNKIE TOP 10!
1.DISNEY STAR WARS ELITE SERIES DARTH MAUL ($65)
I think that I officially like the DISNEY STORE ELITE SERIES STAR WARS figures better than the BLACK SERIES. When the news reported in that there was officially a DARTH MAUL ELITE SERIES available yesterday, I sprung into crazy Go-Go-Gadget mode. All I know is that I certainly never drove that fast or risked life and limb running from my parking spot for a BLACK SERIES figure. Is this just a fad for us Junkies or are they the real deal?
For just $5 and change more than the BLACK SERIES, you are, in my opinion, just getting a better figure that is part die-cast figure with more solid packaging, some kind of epic reflective material on the inside of the package and what looks to be sturdier lightsabers. All SW Junkies have come across a damaged BLACK SERIES shelf warmer but I am yet to set to see an ELITE SERIES no one is buying in less than mint condition. Plus we've got Vader, Grievous, and of course, The Fett himself on EPISODE VII release day. It seems that Maul has split the difference (get it) and the ELITE SERIES is the new BLACK.
2. ARKHAM KNIGHT PLAY ARTS KAI ($99.99)
Admittedly I am not a gamer. Unless MIKE TYSON's PUNCH-OUT is making a big return. That being said, a Junkie like myself cannot still love characters from games especially when said games have the words "BAT" and "MAN" in them. Although I am not exactly sure who the ARKHAM KNIGHT is in the game, AFJers have been waiting for this figure for months and the smaller more affordable version even longer when it was announced it was going to be late in early summer. The symbolic "A" is dead on center of his chest with his dope looking mechanical armor. This figure has it all for the hyper-detailed Junkies out there. And if you are a PLAY ARTS KAI fan, this is the figure for you. He comes with, ready? A translucent visor on his helmet, 2 interchangeable helmet pieces: one to recreate his default appearance and a second one painted so as to give off a glowing eye effect. If that's not enough, you get a sniper rifle, 2 handguns, 3 interchangeable hands for poses and stands at almost one foot tall. What????? Pick this bad boy up here: http://bit.ly/1LNuEFT
3. DISNEY STAR WARS ELITE SERIES FLAMETROOPER ($65)
Oh FLAMETROOPER how you elude me. Not once have I seen it in stock on DisneyStore.com and the secondary sites require another mortgage. As Captain Junkie, I think that this is one of the best ELITE and the most underrated. At first, I thought that it was exclusive to Canada only but then I saw some Junkies getting it in their Force Friday Hauls. WTF?? Did I not do my due diligence? How did I miss out on this? Still, I gotta hope that my reloading click button continues to hold up (3rd mouse this year) because this is a must have and has been the most steadily priced aftermarket figure making it the highest which after almost three weeks is most impressive. I gotta get this soon or see what kind of trade that I can finagle because I am jonesing.
4. DISNEY STAR WARS ELITE SERIES CAPTAIN PHASMA ($65)
You're not really surprised, are you? While Kylo Ren did not make the list because we have some decent backstory on him, I got nothing on CAPTAIN PHASMA except that she, yes SHE is being portrayed by GAME OF THRONES' Gwendoline Christie aka Brienne of Tarth. Who knew that big broad from GOT could fill out the CAPTAIN PHASMA character costume? The reason I love this character so much is A) it is a chick and little girls need more girl heroes to look up to even if she is a little violent ironically like Brienne of Tarth B) Her suit is like a mix of the old Stormtrooper and the new First Order along with a dope looking cape and a sweet looking pistol. C) She looks EVEN BETTER on the screen where the light really shows off that suit of armor. Thankfully I found this one on Force Friday. Also still holding well at around $65 on the secondary market. Damn, George, even with your departure you sure didn't make it easy for us did you?
ANT-MAN was the surprise MARVEL hit of the summer and according to big boss DISNEY, it did better than AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON at the box office. I love the retro look of this ANT-MAN look and its a nice throwback to the old days. You can still find it readily available at your local WALGREENS or at your WALGREENS.com and its a must have in this year of the MARVEL LEGEND.
6. WALGREENS EXCLUSIVE YELLOW DAREDEVIL ($30)
5 and 6 can be interchangeable here. YELLOW DAREDEVIL, my favorite DD look of all time outside of NETFLIX's new sick red-maroon suit for THE MAN WITHOUT FEAR. This new Legend has been moving around like lightning this past week whether in-store or online and it really is a great figure. What I love is that it comes with an alternate head without the cowl. A+ job on the batons too. Well done HASBRO and nice to see more fringe store Exclusives.
7. FLASH TV SERIES CAPTAIN COLD FIGURE ($30)
Hot off the press folks is CAPTAIN COLD from DC COLLECTIBLES! Played by Wentworth Miller on the hit show THE FLASH, whose second season premiere is next week has a new figure in its line from the seriously awesome TV show. Screen accurate and armed with the Cold Gun, I will be purchasing this ASAP for the first of my TV FLASH Rogues Gallery. BUY IT HERE!: http://bit.ly/1jwbQA7
8. TERMINATOR GENISYS 7-INCH ACTION FIGURE SET ($38)
In stock just this week! I am loving these new 7-inch figure 2-pack from the marginal summer hit, TERMINATOR: GENYSIS. I grew up on Ah-Nuld films so I will definitely be picking this up on BLU-RAY asap but not before I get this sweet set of figures. The set includes both the Guardian T-800 (Arnie) and the T-1000. The T-800 comes with his signature Remington shotgun accessory while the T-1000 (with the likeness of actor Byung-hun Lee) and includes an interchangeable battle damaged parts plus a revolver and "arm spear" accessories. Plus at 7-inches tall and over 25 points of articulation, these are a no-brainer to save the future! BUY EM HERE: http://bit.ly/1Lj55Ov
9. PACIFIC RIM GIPSY DANGER ($68)
This deluxe Jaeger from the now cult PACIFIC RIM stands at a whopping 18" that has enhanced sculptural details, an attachable chain-sword weapon with both lights on the chest and head. But that's not all Junkies, the 8-inch long chain-sword weapon attaches at the forearms and can be attached on either the right or left side. And its down from almost a c-note to less than $70 on BBTS!
10. AMAZON EXCLUSIVE MARVEL LEGENDS 4-PACK ($80)
As if this has already not been the biggest year for MARVEL LEGENDS of all time, AMAZON decided to team up with HASBRO and give us ginormous ultimate 4-pack that is far better in person than it looked on the out of focus big screen pics HASBRO had at TOY FAIR in February. This is one bad (fill Samuel L. Jackson's favorite phrase here), is pretty outstanding. So outstanding that I will be doing a separate review of it later this week. And if you have AMAZON PRIME, its a steal at just $20 a figure!
