The Hollywood Reporter has stated that Sir Patrick Stewart will return to the role that made him a star. At the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention, Sir Patrick made a surprise appearance and dropped the huge photon torpedo on everyone that he will bring the Captain back!
Sir Patrick had this to say: "I will always be very proud to have been a part of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course," said Stewart, who will also exec produce the new series. "It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over. During these past years, it has been humbling to hear many stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership. I feel I'm ready to return to him for the same reason — to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times. I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more" (via the Hollywood Reporter, read the full story HERE).
The Picard Series will be the third new Star Trek Series for CBS All Access. Next to Star Trek: Discovery there will be a "four-episode series with each installment running 10-15 minutes that offers deeper explorations of the characters and themes from Discovery" (the Hollywood Reporter). When the new Picard Series will land has yet to be announced.
AFJ's Take: So the rumors were true! Yes! The finale of The Next Generation movie franchise, Nemesis, was a bust. The series (film and television) always belonged to Stewart/ Picard and now we will finally have the chance to see what happens next for the character. We were already big fans of Star Trek: Discovery, so even more Trek is a good thing!
Update: The official Star Trek: The Next Generation Facebook Page posted the historic moment. AFJ also shared its "10 Captain Picard Episodes to Watch Right Now" HERE.
