I was there. My buddies, Will, a diehard Star Wars nut, and Gordon, who came only to witness the insanity, were at Toys R Us on May 3rd, 1999. It was the big Phantom Menace toy release party. It was not a free-for-all or nerds armed with lightsabers hitting each other for the last Ki-Adi-Mundi. In fact, despite the midnight hour, it was fun. Fans, both old and young, were helping each other out. I had to have all the figures and Sebulba’s pod racer that evening. A little guy, no more than 10, gave me his and headed back to find another for himself. Star Wars fans are the best, a fact I was reminded of at Star Wars Celebration Europe (more on that at a later date).
As you might have heard, Hasbro released a special Star Wars calendar to commence the countdown to the release of their new toys for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Our office here at HQ received one and it is nothing short of glorious.
Hasbro is celebrating the release of The Force Awakens with Force Friday on September 4th, 2015, a day that will be long remembered (sorry, had to do it). They issued a calendar to action figure sites, journalists, and Star Wars enthusiasts to prepare for this momentous day. What amazes this critic and Star Wars nut is the infinite details this calendar contains.
Take note of the color key lightsabers (at the bottom) that highlight which era these particular toys come from.
Our first image is a great reminder that not even Kenner or 20th Century Fox was prepared for the onslaught of Star Wars fandom. The image for May the 4th is the first Star Wars toy known as the Early Bird Kit.
Here, they took the time to highlight George Lucas’ Star Wars figure on the day of his birth in 1944. Release dates of the films are also noted as well as the start of principle photography and birthdays of various actors from the Star Wars Saga.
Everything and everyone is here. Hasbro celebrates The Clone Wars, Rebels, Blasters, Galactic Heroes, play-sets, and mini-rigs. Take note of the the new Star Wars Rebels - Ahsoka Tano figure pictured above (comes with Darth Vader in a two-pack this fall).
Force Friday, again, arrives September 4th, 2015. To celebrate this countdown, simply use the hashtag: #ForceFridayCountdown on your social media outlets. I think it’s time to to get in line at Toys R Us. May the force be with you.
