GOTHAM S2 EP7 "MOMMY'S LITTLE MONSTER" REVIEW!
By Jarrett Kruse
Is it possible that GOTHAM could get any darker in Season 2: RISE OF THE VILLAINS? You better believe it as tonight's episode proved that the sun does not shine in Gotham City and probably never will. However that is what I am loving about season 2 of The Dark Knight's residence; it makes no apologies for its violence and brooding darkness. It is what it is and its die hard fans like myself realize that the show is not going to all of a sudden be sunshine and puppies. Its gritty and grimy, down in the dirt and asphalt where bad things happen to good people in a dangerous urban jungle. Basically if I had to sum it up, the second season is really hitting its stride outdoing the freshman season.
At the end of last week's episode, Butch told Penguin he had information about where Galavan was holding his moher captive. Oswald assembles a small army to retrieve his mother but when he does so, somehow Butch's false wiring has been fixed and he is now against Penguin. It seems that the wily Tabitha (Galavan's sister) was able to cognitively dismantle what had been done and turns big Butch back to normal. He is no longer a slave to Penguin. Oswald's mother is released and the two share a moment before Tabitha stabs her right in the back presumably killing her. It is actually a pretty sad moment and as Galavan is walking away ordering Penguin to be killed, the diminutive cripple says that the new Mayor doesn't have the stones to kill him himself. Galavan takes this is as a challenge and right before he is set to kill Penguin, Oswald slashes Theo leading to confused gunfire and Penguin able to easily get away. There is just no way Penguin is going to out like that so early in season 2!
Galavan meets with Barnes at the GCPD regaling his own version of what went on with Penguin and declares Martial Law in Gotham. Gordon and Bullock know that something is up and that Galavan is not everything that he seems to be. Despite the attack, the Mayoral inauguration party is still set to go on for that evening. Briefly, we see Bruce, Silver and Selina at Wayne Manor having tea and when Bruce leaves the room Silver threatens Selina. However when Bruce returns, Silver plays the debutante perfectly despite Selina telling Bruce that she is bad news. Later Selina sees the pair making out while on lookout from a tree. Clearly, Galavan has the young Silver "seducing" the naive Bruce Wayne.
Last we saw Edward Nygma, he had just killed Ms. Kringle in his apartment. After waking up from a deep slumber, his other half is in full effect inside the apartment. Cooler looking, more confident and without the glasses, the other half tells Ed what he did with Kringle's body while he was sleeping. We get to see the first riddle that says to look for Kringle's initials "KK" at the GCPD. Nygma is going mad and when he gets to the station is maniacally looking for the KK initials and finds it in a snack machine. He incessantly puts dollar after dollar into the machine that keeps spewing out Lady Fingers until the last item under KK is Ms. Kringle's hand! While examining the hand, Nygma discovers yet another riddle that leads him to the Medical Examiner's office where Ms. Kringle is in one of the cold drawers. The conversations between the two Nygma's is really creeping me out but is doing a great job of showing the breakdown of Nygma as he transforms into the Riddler.
Since Butch is now no longer cognitively impaired, he has his own crew and is celebrating at a local haunt. While on stakeout, Harvey & Gordon are discussing how coincidental everything has happened since Galavan showed up on the scene in Gotham. They question Butch and ask what happened and handcuff him to a pole when Penguin's men led by Victor Zsasz outside want Butch dead for his betrayal of Penguin. Inside the bar, Gilzean (Butch's last name) is armed to the teeth with a RAMBO-style armory allowing Jim and Harvey to take a barrage of bullets but give as good as they get. Before the firefight, Butch told Gordon cryptically, "I didn't think Galavan would really go through with it." Hmmm. Its gotta be disposing of Penguins mom he's referring to right?
Barnes announce to the city that besides the firefight and the attempt on his life, the celebration will go on for his inauguration. Galavan has secretly made a promise to Tabitha that she and she alone gets to be the one to kill Cobblebot. As the festivities begin and the Gotham Strike Force perched as snipers high above on top of the buildings, what looks like a herd of Cobblepot's make their way towards the reception hall. They ALL look like Penguin, wearing his signature tux, his freaky hairdo and his strange gait and limp. SO WHICH IS THE REAL COBBLEBOT? They cannot give the all clear to fire because they do not know which is the real Penguin. When the group of doppelgangers infiltrate the inauguration party, it becomes a massacre.
Gordon rushes Galavan to safety and a limo out back when the real Cobblebot has a gun on the Mayor and Gordon a gun on Oswald. Cobblebot reveals that Galavan is not who he thinks he is and that his endgame has to do with someone he cares for deeply alluding to the young Bruce Wayne. Confused, Galavan is whispering to Gordon and ordereing him to take him out NOW! A shot rings out that nick's Penguin and it is Tabitha but Oswald gets away. When the smoke clears, Galavan is clearly pissed at Gordon for not killing Penguin on the spot taking care of his biggest problem right away doing his dirty work for him. The Mayor says that he had high hopes for Jim to help him rid Gotham of its monsters to which Gordon replies, "I'm gonna start with you."
Whoa!!! Man I love Gordon's moxie. There was a lot filled into this action packed hour and I honestly have no idea what comes next. Gordon is now wanted by the Mayor himself while young Bruce is under Silver's spell as Galavan has instructed. Galavan's endgame is to have Wayne Enterprises signed over to him lock, stock and barrel. As far as Nygma goes, he has finally unraveled and I am loving how they are playing out his development into the Riddler. Things can only get worse as season 2 continues and I should mention that because of Butch's stump, he was able to get away during the gun battle. See, I knew Penguin cutting off his hand would pay off someday! As far as next week's episode goes, things can only getting darker as the rise continues.
