iZOMBIE S2 EP5 "LOVE & BASKETBALL" REVIEW!
By Jarrett Kruse
Rose McIver continues to be an absolute delight to watch every week. Its not that she only gets to play Olivia "Liv" Moore, full time zombie of the undead. Its that she also gets to take on the personality of whoever winds up on the cold steel slab in the Medical Examiner's office from an unsolved murder. Continuing from the end of last week, Major and Liv are still in a major lip lock that is slowly progressing into something more. However, Liv is immediately worried because she does not know the ramifications of what coitus could mean for Major, Zombie-wise. Would he turn into a full fledged Zombie? Would he still be a full fledged Zombie hit man taking out Seattle's living undead? Liv thinks for both of them and stops the kissing and what was about to follow.
Buzzkill for Major and Liv but better to be safe than sorry. Still all worked up and willing to take a chance, Liv has a killer line, "Horny boys are the worst--when all your blood returns to your normal locations you're gonna care whether that makeout session has made you living or living undead." Only Liv could pull a line like that off to totally kill a romantic mood. Meanwhile a regular joe security guard at a highrise takes a couple of slugs to the chest to his demise. Liv and Ravi arrive on the scene along with Babineaux where they find that the last page of the entry log was pulled out. Mike Hayden was an innocent security guard and their are not a heck of a lot of leads at the relatively low tech and vanilla office.
Over at Blaine's funeral home, Gabriel shows up, willing to cut the Utopium like he did for the boat party but refuses to eat brains to satiate his hunger. Blaine could care less, he just wants the batches made up and fast. With Hayden on the slab, I know this sounds disgusting and crazy, but the producers make the scenes where Liv makes a new delicacy with the victims brains look as appetizing as anything you see on THE FOOD NETWORK! In the basement of the SUPER MAX facility, they have a cray zombie chained to the wall. The doctor there tells Gilda that they need a drop of blood from a fully functional Zombie and fast. Clearly the doctor is suggesting to get a blood sample from her new roommate that happens to fit the blood profile of the sample they need. I am surprised that between Liv and Major and Gilda, none of them have crossed paths just yet. However, when Gilda lifts a blood sample of Liv's, she realizes that Major and Liv swapped spit just a few days earlier.
Some kids show up at the precinct to say that they think their basketball coach, Mike Hayden, was murdered by a kid named RJ's father. An abusive father whose kid left the team weeks earlier. Apparently this guy beats his kid when he has custody of his child. Major tells Gilda that he needs a stronger sedative to take out his list of possible Zombies to kill. Dr. Erving is interested in what happened to the last victim that did not get knocked out by the sedative. The coach in Liv has her give a rousing speech to Major like RUDY when he decides to go to bed at 7:45. She tells him to meet him downstairs to watch HOOSIERS when in the past Liv always refused. Except now, Liv is thriving with athletic testosterone and jock needs!
Babineaux decides to pay the abusive father a visit after hours who puts a hand on Clive giving him a reason to knock the hell out of him. When he is called into his Captain's office the next day, he thinks he is going to be reprimanded for it but what the Chief really wants to know is why he is still looking into if Suzuki committed suicide at MEAT CUTE. FBI Agent Bozzio continues to flirt with Clive in the background and you can just tell he is eventually going to give in to their rapport. Liv has set it up that Major is now the basketball coach of Hayden's team. Dropped off at Ravi's lab is some of the cure courtesy of Blaine that seems to confuse the hell out of Ravi as he is not exactly used to dealing with underworld characters.
Liv is excited about the possible cure that Scott E's twin brought but Ravi brings her back down to Earth telling her that it can take months to do the rigorous testing it will require before it can be used on humans. There is some kind of back story having to do with a crowd funding website for the basketball team that barely raised a $1000 but received a last minute BitCoin donation for $4100 to meet their goal that is untraceable. Holding up his end of the bargain, Major is out Zombie hunting when he comes across a regular working guy that seems to be the perfect mark to off until his kids run up to him to give him big hugs. Uh-oh, this is not going to be Major's moonlighting gig for that much longer.
FBI Agent Bozzio brings Clive some top shelf information that one of the hairs found at the MEAT CUTE massacre was that of famed missing astronaut Alan York. Hmmm. Captain Suzuki killed himself inside MEAT CUTE leaving the words "BLAINE" in blood on the wall in season one. Clearly Bozzio thinks that something much bigger went on that night at MEAT CUTE and wants Babineaux involved in the investigation.
One of the bodies from the video of the lobby (Kenny Bania from SEINFELD as a guest M.E.!) is up in Tacoma, WA which means a road trip for the crew. Ravi, Clive and Liv are convinced that the body was no contruction accident but blunt force trauma leading the team to a high powered law firm where the clues start to fall into a place. Right before Ravi is going to experiment on rats, Blaine shows up at the M.E.'s office needing the cure and fast. Gabriel injects himself with the tainted Max Rager formula thinking it was the real cure and it is not pretty and he is dead within minutes and ready for his own cold drawer and toe tag. With only half a bottle left, both Ravi and Blaine realize what they have left in the beaker is instant zombie killer. What ensues is a fight by two guys that do not know how to fight until the rest of the vial shatters on the floor. That's that.
The murder backstory is a little convoluted and confusing especially the whole thing with the gambling story that led to the night clerks death. Major gives Gilda a list of potential zombies saying that eight of them were not infected so he did not kill them. Gilda assures him that Du Lac's research is not something that he put together willy nilly. If he said those people were Zombies, they were most likely Zombies. However this is Major's big eff you to being controlled anymore. Finally he dumps the rest of his Utopium and tells Liv that he wants to be with her, forever. Its a pleasant thought but for now seemingly impossible. Finally, Mrs. Suzuki shows up to talk to Clive and says she does not know whether or not her late husband was suicidal. She pulls out a tupperware of something she found that she thought that he should see and exits quietly.
While this was not my favorite episode of the season, mainly because the main murder with the gambling secondary story was the weakest of the season. As far as murders go I mean. Liv is priceless as the jock personality she takes on and McIver continues to impress me with her acting range. The destruction of the formula that would help Ravi create a Zombie cure was a major bummer but watching him try to fight was pretty damn funny. As for next week, I have nothing but high hopes because I heart Liv.
