I have to buy a Nintendo Switch. I told myself I wouldn’t do it this time, but deep down, I knew this day would come.
Today, Nintendo announced at E3 the next Super Smash Bros game: Super Smash Bros Ultimate. God damn, I am hooked again. I bought the Wii U just for Super Smash Bros, and it looks like I’ll be doing that again for the Switch.
Nothing at E3 has excited me more than a new Super Smash Bros (except for maybe The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. I have an odd taste in games. Life is Strange is an amazing series and this game will impact season 2. So, I’m all in. /Rant). In the words of Doki Doki Literature Club developer, Dan Salvato:
Life is officially canceled, Smash is all that remains

Though Nintendo did announce a new Fire Emblem game, I don’t remember anything else, Smash has overshadowed all of that. Everyone is here. Every character that has ever been playable in the game will be back. Here’s what that List looks like:
Mario, Samus, Kirby, Bowser, Link, Donkey Kong, Fox, Falco, Marth, Zelda, Sheik, Villager, Meta Knight, Mewtwo, Sonic, Peach, Pikachu, Ice Climbers, Captain Falcon, Zero Suit Samus, Wii Fit Trainer, Pokemon Trainer, Ness, Lucas, Ryu, Ganondorf, Ike, Cloud, Snake, Jigglypuff, Pichu, Roy, Olimar, Diddy Kong, Lucario, Lucina, Robin, Bayonetta, Mr. Game & Watch, Greninja, Dr. Mario, R.O.B., Duck Hunt, Pit, Dark Pit, Palutena, Corrin, Bowser Jr., Toon Link, Young Link, King Dedede, Rosalina & Luma, Mii Brawler, Mii Gunner, Mii Swordsman, Wario, Little Mac, Pac-man, Shulk, Wolf, Megaman, Yoshi, and Luigi.
EVERYONE IS HERE! Are you freaking out? Because I’m freaking out right now. We haven’t seen some of these characters in a game since Melee, 10 years ago. Feel old yet?
On top of all that, they hinted that there may be even more characters. What they did say, for new characters was reveal Inkling (which we saw in the teaser trailer earlier this year), Daisy (as an echo character for peach, which means she has the same move set, just aesthetic changes), and RIDLEY from Metroid! Admittedly, I have no idea who this is, but that reveal was fantastic.
They also disclosed three more awesome details for the new game: eight player battles (crazy), a freaking GameCube controller (crazier!) and one more thing…The game may start with just the original roster of eight or twelve characters (craziest).
What I loved about the first games in the series was the anticipation and challenge that came with each new character that got added to your roster. I remember vividly the day my brother and I learned how to unlock Mewtwo in Melee. We checked our match time, which was already high, and my brother came up with a plan: we start a stock match, and leave the game on overnight. The next morning we finished the game and we unlocked Mewtwo (naturally my brother beat it, he was much better than me). Every new character added was an event, and I’m excited to see that again in Ultimate!
The game releases on December 7th this year, and it cannot come fast enough.
