THE AFJ REVIEW: SDCC '16 MEZCO EXCLUSIVE ONE:12 COLLECTIVE CAPTAIN AMERICA

By Jarrett Kruse

Captain America is on a hot streak. Not only did Steve Rogers kick serious ass in Civil War, MEZCO managed to debut this sleeper figure at San Diego Con that knocked my socks off. While the price point was a little pricey at $110, I am here to tell you that I would have bought have bought two had they allowed it at their booth! This is just that damn nice a piece for your collection.

To start with, it comes in this brilliantly realized circular tin with the immediately recognizable red, white & blue that we have become accustomed. The lid is basically Cap's shield with the ominous star at the center and a sticker that says, "2016 CON EXCLUSIVE" next to MEZCO's bug logo. When you open the lid, a lenticular piece is revealed that moves when you move it towards and away from the light. So you get to see the 95-pound Steve Rogers turn into the 265 All-American soldier. It is a really nice touch and bonus that I can see Junkies spending extra on just to get the Con Exclusive.

When you take off the lid and the paper that smartly covers the chest of the iconic figure, a perfectly detailed chest with real cloth adding to the perfect contours of the sculpt. I love that they went with Cap's look from early on, 70's & 80's to be precise and the bonuses are insane. The boots and gloves are painstakingly detailed with a high gloss shine that really brings them out in the proper light as a separate entity than the rest of the figure. These hands have feet have kicked in skulls and knocked out the baddest of bad. The Vibranium made shield is perfect in its luster as are the bonus grenades, knife and additional sets of hands.

This is going to be a heck of a lot of fun to photograph in the nearby woods and despite it not being my favorite iteration of Cap (as far as suit color goes), I think that this is absolute smash as MEZCO's first foray into the House of Ideas aka MARVEL. The articulation is not that of a MARVEL LEGENDS figure but more of a "MARVEL LEGENDS light" look and feel. It stands the same scale as the LEGENDS figures but you can just tell right away that this did not come off an assembly line. This is old school craftsmanship meeting the digital age and MEZCO has married in the two in a fantastic combo. This is an absolute must have for collectors looking to get into the higher end figure market just as this scale is gaining speed and notoriety. The sign of things to come from MEZCO was one of the few bright spots of a stale 2016 SDCC. I can't wait to see what the Mez and his gang from LIC come up with next. For now, head over to MEZCOTOYZ.COM and reserve your Con Exclusives today.

Vowing to serve his country any way he could, young Steve Rogers took the super soldier serum to become America’s one-man army. Fighting for the red, white and blue for over 60 years, Captain America is the living, breathing symbol of freedom and liberty.
