THE AFJ TOP 10 AUGUST HOT LIST
By Jarrett Kruse
Ah the beginning of a new month when I miss ToyFare Magazine desperately as I try and collectively make a mental Top 10 hotlist. I decided that the closest thing we are going to get is the AFJ TOP 10 HOT LIST so lets dive in as it is now an official monthly feature. Can you guess who made the coveted Top 10? Are you armed with your wallet and PayPal ready to pick any and all of these up? We shall see Junkies! Without any further ado, the list!!
10. HASBRO MARVEL LEGENDS 12-INCH (SPIDER-MAN, CAPTAIN AMERICA, IRON MAN) ($50 EACH)
HASBRO is back producing 12-inch versions of their wildly successful MARVEL LEGENDS line. It has been a long time since the TOY BIZ 12-INCH figures so I was very pleased that these made the cut for HASBRO at their big show at Toy Fair back in February. The streamlined packaging is slick and stylish and great for both the display Junkie and the ones are the Mint-on-Card crowd. A definite pick up for all at jut $49.99 but wait for one of TRU's 20% off coupons and nab it for $39.99. Solid in structure and design, they really did not need to reinvent the wheel here.
9. SDCC KYLO REN w/ VADER SKULL ($70)
I did not even bother this year to attempt to get on a line just to get a ticket to get on another line which is the official line which then turns into a mouse maze with the cheese being the figures. They were sold out by Saturday on some of the product and it was truly a taxing venture. Anyway, here is a new Kylo Ren with his helmet and his Grandad's burnt one. Plus their is a First Order banner for good measure. Nothing too wild here that had me giddy but they know that the STAR WARS Junkies are an easy mark with loose purse-strings.
8. DC COMICS MULTIVERSE SUICIDE SQUAD RICK FLAG ($30)
Although actor Joel Kinnaman did not really break out in the ROBOCOP reboot, I have been a fan of his since I started watching THE KILLING on AMC. Still, Kinnaman is a hot property and this Rick Flag figure has been really tough to come by for the completist Junkie like myself! If there is a six figure set, I need all six despite if I am not even a fan of the final character. With positive buzz abounding on the interwebs, hopefully we will see this figure on the pegs sooner than later.
7. SDCC EXCLUSIVE INDIANA JONES POP! VINYL ($160)
It is hard to imagine that the minds at FUNKO have not pilfered and made every INDIANA JONES character from four films into their highly collectible POP! VINYLS. The line was so outrageous at CON that you would have thought they were giving something away for free (they weren't...I checked). This is one dope looking POP though and at the airport on the way home is when I heard about the DISNEY STORE Exclusive POP! which I think I liked even more than the the CON one. See picture here:
I have pretty much lost my patience with MATTYCOLLECTOR.COM and their strange online retail habits. I happened to luck out and randomly picked this awesome ANTI-ETERNIA HE-MAN figure for just $35 so definitely a win considering at the time it was going for $100 on the secondary market. I would buy more of their figures if they could figure out what the heck they want to focus on and sell. The announcement of MATTYCOLLECTOR falling apart tore through Comic Con but the revelers did not seem to care that much as their was no "must have" CON Exclusive for them this year in my opinion.
5. SDCC MEZCO ONE:12 COLLECTIVE ARMORED BATMAN CON EXCLUSIVE ($180)
I made a beeline for the MEZCO booth to pick this bad boy up and man am I thrilled with this action figure. Actually calling it just a figure is a disservice the amazing design and detail to this epic entry into the world of toys. Mez and his band of Junkies have touted their ONE:12 Collective quietly as the next big thing in toys--the high end action figure for enthusiasts with discerning taste for high quality accessories and amazing bells & whistles. It all comes together in this awesome iteration of the best realized Armored Batman from a film that only did so-so at the box office, all things considered. On the plus side, without the film, we would not have gotten this amazing figure.
4. NECA SDCC EXCLUSIVE TMNT 4-PLAYER ARCADE SET
It wouldn't be an SDCC without a stellar showing from our pals at NECA. While I have never been the biggest TMNT fan, Randy and his wrecking crew made this (and the Foot Clan set) an absolute must have for Junkies and from what I heard, they were scarce on the Convention Floor by the weekend. Prices have soared on eBay to almost double the retail cost. Well done NECA, well done indeed.
3. SDCC EXCLUSIVE HASBRO BLACK SERIES OBI-WAN KENOBI ($85)
This was beautifully engineered and pulled off by the minds at HASBRO. Naturally it was sold out by the time of the third day of Con making me rub my eyes and stamp my feel like a 10 year old without a smartphone to play Pokemon GO. Still, I love when these Exclusive Black Series figures are released because they always have the greatest extras and packaging. I love that we receive a table and a holographic Leia delivering a message of doom. Classic.
The buzz was all about the upcoming STAR WARS story led by actress Felicity Jones aka Jyn Erso, the mysterious rebel from the upcoming film. Another one that was Sold Out by Day 3 of CON left me super bummed but extra beers at the bar for me as I wallowed that I got shut out not once but twice by the same company! Oh well, there's always eBay right? Maybe I will be able to score one when HASBRO reveals their Exclusives on HTS. Who knows but I definitely think that the STAR WARS girl power is in full effect for the second year in a row.
1. MARVEL LEGENDS DEADPOOL ($60)
The Merc with a Mouth owns 2016. The character knows no bounds and continues to cross genres and be adored by men, women, kids and anyone else with a pulse. Chances are when a new ML Deadpool appears, Junkies go bonkers and rightfully so for this current iteration because he is loaded with extras. Plus there is plenty of room for the accessories he comes with because no BAF piece is included making finding him on the pegs that much harder. Congrats DP, you are #1...
