Rocket League is like soccer, if a car was your foot, and you only had one foot. In the most basic terms, you use a rocket-powered car to smash a giant soccer ball into your opponent’s goal before they do it to you. Yesterday, Rocket League developers, Psyonix, announced a new car DLC (Downloadable Content) that you can acquire June 18th, the Jurassic Park Jeep.
Like many of their other car DLCs, the Jurassic Park Jeep will cost $1.99. At this point, Rocket League has touched numerous different franchises from popular media over the years: Back to the Future, Fast and the Furious, Batman v Superman, Batman ’89, and classic Hot Wheels cars. A game with over 40 million players, and 60,000 people playing on steam concurrently, we can expect that this game will keep going, and that means they will make more of our favorite cars playable!
From the 1968 movie, The Love Bug, this Volkswagen Beetle has a mind of its own. This is one of those instantly recognizable cars that, while not as fearsome as the Batmobile, would still get inside your opponent’s head. If they were laughing when they saw your car across the field, they won’t be after you score with your tiny car.
- Christine (there is a murder in this scene)
Another car with a mind of its own, Stephen King’s novel turned movie in 1983, Christine is alive and violent. This vintage Plymouth Fury will drive your opponents crazy, and probably you too. Challenge yourself to tame this possessed car because she’s not really a fan of other cars. (Let’s hope they can make ‘on-fire mode’ too.)
Oh, the Impala. Basically a character in its own right, Winchester’s Chevrolet Impala has been through everything. It’s been in almost every one of the 287 episodes of Supernatural. It’s been crushed and smashed, but Sam and Dean can’t seem to let go of their father’s car. It’s a force to be reckoned with, and it’s the car I’d want if they ever had monster trucks in Rocket League. (See what I did there?)
- The A-Team
Nearly as iconic as the team itself, The A-Team van is an obvious choice for some new DLC. This van is how the A-Team gets around and if it worked for them, it will work for you. And if the thought were to be believed that the only difference between some cars is their hitbox, The A-Team van would be amazing in-game because of how big it is. Also, you get to be part of the A-team if you drive this.
- Green Hornet
Like many of the other cars on this list, this car is as much a character as the people. Though, like the reboot of the A-team, the reboot of Green Hornet was met with mixed reviews, it doesn’t make The Black Beauty any less awesome. Packed with over 20 different weapons, this 1966 Imperial Crown is a classic. And if you're driving it, that makes you Kato.
- Knight Rider
KITT, the nearly indestructible car driven by David Hasselhoff in the original Knight Rider TV show, would make an amazing addition to the Rocket League line-up. Imagine driving around the field, hitting the ball, scoring, and having KITT talk to you all the while. You get to play a game where you hit a giant soccer ball around a stadium, all while listening to Mr. Feeny (William Daniels) tell you how you're doing.
- James Bond
The most famous of James Bond’s cars, the Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger, is so well known throughout the world I’m surprised this car is not already in Rocket League. This car full of gadgets in some movies, and just a cool car in others, will be a sign to your opponent that you are sophisticated, and they will be shaken, not stirred. (Also you get to be James Bond, you're welcome.)
- Speed Racer
For Speed Racer, nothing is better than the Mach Five. Originally a 2-volume manga, then a 52-episode anime, and then a 2-hour movie, Speed Racer has endured since the 1960s. In a game full of awesome cars meant to push around a giant ball, you would think you might have one of the coolest racecars in pop culture. Also, considering that this car is very flat, it may be a challenge to use well, which would be fun for completionists out there.
This is one just for me. I haven’t played a lot of Rocket League, but if I did, I would love Captain Falcon’s F-zero racecar: the Blue Falcon. This may not be the same for anyone else, but this car brings me back to my bedroom as a kid and being furious at the controls of the SNES game. It’s just so amazing. The match starts; Captain Falcon gets in the car and asks your opponent to show him their moves.
The Ecto-1. If you have the DeLorean from Back to the Future, how do you not have the Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters? It may have needed “some suspension work and shocks. Brakes, brake pads, lining, steering box, transmission, rear-end…Also, new rings, mufflers, a little wiring,” but this car is a staple of Pop-culture. Imagine the lights igniting as you scored a goal and Slimer rushing out of the net. Winning any match could be followed by, “we came, we saw, we kicked its ass.”
That’s my list of 10 cars I want as DLC in Rocket League. Did I forget any of your favorites? Let me know in the comments below Junkies!
