TOP 10 HOT LIST: SEPTEMBER
By Jarrett Kruse
A lot has happened since the end of August. I up and moved my whole life from the great state of New Jersey to the year round warm climates of Los Angeles where a majority of the toy companies and of course movie studios reside. I took a chance on myself and this little thing called AFJ that I could not have done without each and every one of our 16,000 plus members. That being said, the hot temperatures here in “The Valley” mirror the September HOT 10 list and the toys that are must haves for every card carrying Junkie. So without further ado, here are the HOT 10 plus one honorable mention that just missed the list.
***(PRICES ARE CUMULATIVE ESTIMATES & AVERAGES OF SOLD LISTINGS ON EBAY AND COSTS ON MAJOR RETAIL SITES)***
10. DC COMICS ICONS JOKER: DEATH IN THE FAMILY $25
The DC ICONS line marches on with one of the most sinister Joker figures from Bat-history. The signature purple suit with matching fedora he sported in the seminal graphic novel that saw the death of Robin is a must have for any Bat-Junkie worth their Gotham citizenship. Fantastic figure with plenty of extras, buy this DC ICONS piece now before it starts to climb in price.
9. DIAMOND SELECT GHOSTBUSTERS SLIMER $30
Forget the GHOSTBUSTERS movie from July that lost a ton of dough and put some film execs on the street and take a trip back with me to the glorious summer of ’84 when the world was introduced to the world’s most iconic ghost, Slimer! The amazing GHOSTBUSTERS line from toy heavyweight DIAMOND SELECT is humming along with Wave 3 where Slimer makes his debut after an over decade long absence is action figure form. A dead on sculpt with replacement faceplate full of hot dogs, this is still the ghost with the most 32 years later!
8. MARVEL LEGENDS WINTER SOLDIER (WAL*MART EXCLUSIVE) $30
The Winter Soldier is one of those rare new characters that fits in perfectly into the MARVEL canon. From what I understand, MARVEL Comics had one rule for a long time and that was, “Only Bucky stays dead.” Well the Soldier has risen and was the dividing cause in the ultimate superhero movie, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. The WAL*MART Exclusive was tough to find on the pegs for a solid month but has now dropped to an affordable $30 on the secondary market. Well worth it for a terrific sculpt and facial likeness.
7. MAFEX BATMAN V SUPERMAN BATMAN $45
Since MEZCO delayed their long anticipated ONE:12 COLLECTIVE figure from the BVS film, MAFEX took advantage of the opening with what I think is the best iteration of Bat-Fleck yet. Somehow, MAFEX managed to really nail the hunch that Bats seemed to have in the film. The piece stands at close to 6 & 1/2 inches and is really one of my favorite sleeper figures of this Fall. You can find it for a scant $45 on sites like BIGBADTOYSTORE.com but I have a feeling they will not be in stock for much longer.
6. DC MULTIVERSE MUTANT LEADER $33
THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS character from Frank Miller’s seminal series that reinvented Batman for a new generation finally gets a decent action figure. While I am not a big fan of the quality in the DC MULTIVERSE figures from MATTEL, I really like that they took a risk on some rarely seen in figure form characters from one of the greatest storylines of all time. They dystopian Mutant Leader captures the creepy Gotham underworld perfectly and is the perfect foil for the new Dark Knight figure from the same line. Keep reloading on AMAZON and you may get lucky and score it for just $15.99!
5. MARVEL LEGENDS FALCON (WAL*MART EXCLUSIVE) $30
Another WAL*MART Exclusive from the box office juggernaut CIVIL WAR, this is one of my personal sentimental favorites as I have always been a huge Sam Wilson fan. Anthony Mackie was inspired casting for the film version of Falcon and his suit has really improved since he made his debut in the first Cap sequel, WINTER SOLDIER. Now, we finally have a LEGENDS scale figure complete with a wingspan worthy of CONDORMAN! I love that the figure has a battle-damaged feel to it just like in the movie. This piece, along with the WAL*MART Winter Soldier, will definitely be hot for awhile as the holiday season approaches.
4. DC UNIVERSE SUICIDE SQUAD DIABLO $45
Even though I did not really enjoy the SUICIDE SQUAD film, I did really dig the the costume & production design. And the few Diablo scenes were pretty epic in scale which could be why this figure has become impossible to find on the pegs. You name the mass market chain and I have not found it anywhere. I did get to see it in person way back in February at Toy Fair though but I have lost no less than three eBay auctions trying to fill out my SUICIDE SQUAD lineup. It doesn’t look like this piece is going to be a peg warmer anytime soon as it seems to be the short pack of the bunch. I just realized the pun of “peg warmer” when referring to Diablo!
3. MARVEL LEGENDS HOBGOBLIN $35
My favorite Spidey villain finally gets the 21st century treatment it deserves. This LEGENDS figure hits all the right marks in its gory detail from top to bottom and includes one of the dopest Goblin Gliders of all time. Super evil looking and complete with pumpkin bombs, I had to buy two just to have an extra to display. This Hobgoblin will go perfectly with the forthcoming Green Goblin set for later this year. Definitely one of the nicest LEGENDS of 2016.
2. MARVEL LEGENDS SCARLET WITCH $50
The Olsen sister with the real talent has revealed herself in the form of the MARVEL cinematic universe’s Scarlet Witch. Not only is she beautiful but she has some serious power behind those gorgeous doe eyes. The babe that uttered, “No more mutants” is one of the nicest female LEGENDS to ever be released. I love the spot on likeness and costume simplicity that the MCU designers gave the daughter of Magneto too. If you did not order a case, this figure, and female LEGENDS in general, have a history of being scarce on retail pegs. The figure has steadily been averaging between $40 & $50 for the past month while others have waned. It seems that the DVD release of CIVIL WAR has bolstered the demand for the figure making this the season of the Witch.
1. MATTY COLLECTOR THUNDERCATS LION-O $55
It is a strange victory for MATTEL this month as their MATTY COLLECTOR branch has fallen by the wayside with an announcement that they are pretty much going out of business. So the long anticipated reboot of the THUNDERCATS line is bittersweet as we will only be getting five figures before the inevitable demise of MATTY. Still, this LION-O is a fantastic figure with everything we have been waiting for that the 2011 toy reboot lacked. You just cannot go wrong when you go back to basics and that is why LION-O sold out in super fast fashion. I genuinely hope that MATTEL can figure out a way to keep the THUNDERCATS line going as it still remains a wildly popular property among the Junkies that love anything 80’s.
***AFJ HONORABLE MENTION***
MARVEL LEGENDS SILK $35
Another lady LEGENDS figure that just missed the cut is the stunning SILK from the recent Spidey wave. Here is another example of the elusive female LEGENDS piece and also that rare new character that was fast-tracked to be made into plastic perfection. SILK is totally Junkie-worthy.
