There had been rumors and rumblings that Sony Pictures was going to go forward with their plans for a Spider-Man spin-off movie titled Venom. Well, we are past the point of rumors and hearsay now as Sony announced that Tom Hardy (yes, Bane from The Dark Knight Rises) will play the title character. The film also has a director, Reuben Fleisher who brought to us the glorious Zombieland.  Which isn't all the news as the film already has a release date of Oct. 5, 2018. It also appears that producers Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Amy Pascal have a Silver Sable and Black Cat film in the works too. There was no announcement for that film.

The big question is, will this be a part of the new Spider-Man universe that Sony has in the works now with Disney/ Marvel Studios. Or will Tom Holland as Spider-Man meet up with Tom Hardy's Venom in a Sony Pictures (Non-MCU) film down the road? I believe the bigger question is, do we want to see a movie about a villain that has not been pre-established outside of a dismal third act for a franchise that won't even be a part of the new film's continuity?
