THE FLASH S2 EP5 "THE DARKNESS AND THE LIGHT" REVIEW!
By Jarrett Kruse
THE FLASH has to have a bad episode at some point right? Well not this season just yet. The hit CW show is now five for five in their sophomore season. As each new episode airs, the more invested I become in Barry Allen and the gang and those pesky meta-humans that are becoming more and more of an issue as the main breach of the 52 created by the singularity keep bringing more and more bad guys to Central City. Worse still, most are entering our Earth via the biggest breach that happens to be in the center of STAR Labs. Talk about bad luck but I am loving every minute of it. For an hour long show, THE FLASH has incredible repeat value and like it or not, I seem to always miss one small detail on my initial viewing. It is only by the third or fourth screening that I finally get all of the pertinent information I need to write a super well informed reviewed. So now, lets venture into the darkness and the light.
Last week's epic ending when King Shark showed up and was stopped by Harrison Wells of EARTH-2 left us with a lot of questions. First of which is, why the hell is any version of Harrison Wells helping Barry Allen on any of the 52 Earths? However we start the episode 8 months ago in a pristine and futuristic looking Central City with a walking Harrison Wells on EARTH-2 with his young daughter by his side giving a presentation to a bevy of astonished onlookers and press. Wells prsents a watch and an App that can detect meta-humans to an astonished crowd. He talks about how their meta-human awareness apps to instantly detect a meta-human like ZOOM will save future lives. Just then, the Jay Garrick Flash shows up at the press conference telling Wells to tell them all the truth. Garrick says that the creation of ZOOM is his fault because two years ago Wells created all the metas when 11 hours before the frist meta sighitng, enormous blasts of dark matter radiation was silently expelled underneath the STAR Labs facility. Garrick says that Wells takes no responsibility for the wreckage and mistakes that he has caused and that he needs his help to fix things. Instead, the arrogant and pompous Wells tells Flash to do his job and stop ZOOM. Garrick runs off and thats that and we are back on our Earth.
Since he was just saved by him, Barry brings back Earth-2 Wells to STAR Labs much to the teams confusion. Cisco's visions and powers are getting worse but he is still reluctant to tell anyone else besides Dr. Stein who is in Pittsburgh. While at Jitters, Barry and Cisco run into the always enthusiastic Detective Patty Spivot who again flirts with Barry but has to leave quickly. However, Cisco goads Barry after not asking her out yet and reverses the challenge. Cisco then decides to ask the Jitters coffee clerk out but crashes and burns miserably. Suddenly Cisco has one of his visions and almost collapses and tells Barry that their is a robbery in progress that he has to get to ASAP. Cisco's powers are manifesting more and more and seemingly more powerful. Barry encounters a new villain by the name of Doctor Light at the bank who according to the new Wells is from Earth-2.
Back at STAR Labs, Wells and Garrick are obviously major enemies from Earth-2. Wells says that Garrick is hiding and that ZOOM has only gotten stronger and faster. Cisco has taken to calling the new Wells "Harry" because as he puts it, "he is just a dick." In a moment of weakness since Wells sensed it, Cisco tells him that the original Wells put his hand through his heart but that Barry erased it by travelling through time. Wells is definitely onto Cisco that he is a meta, its just a matter of time before he reveals to the rest of the gang. In fact, his watch from Earth-2 that detects meta's goes off as Cisco leaves the room.
Doctor Light is taking another bank heist when Barry catches up to her as THE FLASH and in the vault, Light says no one can save her from ZOOM. She lights up and takes off her mask and its....Barry's former girlfriend Linda Park, sportswriter from the Picture News from last season. She says, "how do you know my name?" and blasts Barry with a major blast of light making him temporarily blind. However, Barry finally has a big date with Detective Spivot but is now rendered without sight! This should be good. Oh and since Doctor Light/Linda-2 now knows she has a doppelganger in Central City, they make sure that Earth-1's Linda is protected at the paper where Iris works too.
Cisco creates a pair of glasses for Barry to wear on his date so that he can virtually see on his date and it is all very Matt Murdock/Daredevil-ish. Spivot cleans up nice and looks stunning as Cisco whispers everything Barry needs to do on his date since Barry cannot see a bloody thing. The date goes really well all things considered and Cisco is having a blast playing the master controller of Barry's date. Meanwhile while staking out the paper where Linda works, Garrick and Caitlyn start sharing and as I called it a few weeks ago, there is clearly something there and after mentioning without mentioning a pal named Aquaman on his Earth, the two move in for a kiss when their van is hit hard by Doctor Light knocking the both of them out but not for long. Inside the Picture News, Light says that he has to kill Earth-1 Linda so that she can assume her life and live on. Doctor Light kills Editor Larkin without hesitation and it was then that I remembered that Joe gave Iris a revolver to carry earlier in the episode. Iris shoots off Light's mask and then she expels an enormous burst of light but her mask is now off. Iris is a damn good shot just like her old man.
Spivot and Barry's date comes to an end and my man Barry finally gets some so good for him in his quest to get over Iris. Earth-1 Linda is totally freaked out that someone that looks like her wanted to kill her from another place they cannot really explain to her without revealing classified information. Naturally Barry blames himself for being on a date when this all happened. Back at STAR Labs, Wells and Garrick come to blows as Harrison says that Barry is not a coward and runs towards danger and not away from it the way Garrick did on Earth-2. Wells is adamant in talking to Barry and that he has to listen to him in catching Light. Wells outs Cisco as having powers and they need his abilities to use Doctor Light's mask to find out where she is. What surprised me is that no one at STAR seemed that surprised that Cisco is a meta! Cisco explains that he gets these visions when breachers are near and Wells orders him to touch Light's mask but nothing happens the first few times until Wells forcefully pushes the mask onto Cisco's chest when he gets an exact location on Doctor Light. I will say that the new Wells gets results.
Light is at a train station trying to get away from ZOOM and starts attacking the Flash. Wells tells Barry to create speed mirages to throw her off which Wells from the first season used so well to his advantage to fool everyone that he was in two places at once. Via a pep talk from Garrick, Barry mirages enough to confuse the hell out of Doctor Light and knocks her out cold. Looks like there is another meta for the pipeline. I keep wondering how the food service in the pipeline is and if they get TV and wi-fi. Sorry, went off on a tangent there.
Back at STAR Labs, Barry says that they have to lure ZOOM to them but Garrick disagrees and has to go. His parting thought is that the new Wells is not that different from the original Wells in that bad things started happening when his particle accelerator exploded. I think that it is a warning that Barry and company should heed with hypervigilance. Back at Jitters, Cisco gets coffee from the barista that turned him down a few days earlier but for those fanboys and girls paying attention, the coffee girl is none other than Kendra Saunders aka HAWKGIRL! I had to save it till the end. Kendra agrees to go out on a date with Cisco as Barry, Caitlyn and him discuss that the king of nicknames now needs one himself since he is officially a meta. Barry comes up with "VIBE" and its an immediate hit.
The final scene, and I love that they do this, is back on Earth-2 where Wells' daughter is being held in a disgusting prison by ZOOM. We finally get a better look at the super-baddie that tells Wells' daughter that there is no way she is going anywhere despite her screams that her father is the smartest man alive. Not right now he isn't. As usual, I cannot wait for next Tuesday for my next FLASH-fix. If you haven't seen Season 1 of THE FLASH, go splurge and get the DVD so you can catch up on the best superhero show on TV!
